Edison Preparatory School celebrated the opening of the new Edison Preparatory Athletic Center on Tuesday, Nov. 6. A ribbon cutting ceremony inside the lobby of the building signified its official opening.
"This is a tremendous new building here at Edison," said Dr. Keith Ballard, Tulsa Public Schools superintendent. "The new and updated facilities are sure to complement the great athletic programs for many years."
The new arena measures 52,000 square feet and features ceramic tile walls and trophy cases incorporated throughout the building. Amenities include a new basketball court; updated locker rooms for athletes, coaches and referees; laundry facilities and concession stands. Weight rooms and a batting cage add training facilities for student athletes. The athletic center also houses a new Edison Eagles spirit store.
"The Edison Preparatory Athletic Center is a wonderful addition to the Tulsa Public athletic facilities and it will proudly serve district athletes, coaches and the Edison community," said Derrick Schmidt, Edison principal.
The facility was paid for by the 2010 bond passed by the citizens of Tulsa. Construction began in October 2010 and was completed in August at a cost of $11.4 million.
