Tulsa Public Schools is getting a head start on educator recruitment for the 2018-2019 school year with the launch of the Tulsa Teacher Corps as well as recruitment efforts targeting both career teachers and early- and mid-career professionals looking to change fields.

"As we continue to grapple with our state teacher shortage, Tulsa Public Schools is focusing not only on hiring seasoned educators, but also on training and developing new teachers in our first cohort of the Tulsa Teachers Corps," said Chief Talent and Learning Officer Devin Fletcher.

The Tulsa Teacher Corps is a district-run teacher development program funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education's Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) grant program. Corps members will be selected through a competitive application process and will enroll in an intensive five-week hands-on training program taking place during summer 2018. Participants who successfully complete the summer program will then spend a year developing foundational teaching techniques as full-time teachers with personalized training and expert coaches to guide them along the way.

"We're excited to be able to offer this innovative pathway to the classroom where new educators will benefit from the guidance and expertise of teacher leaders in our district," said Fletcher.

The district will also kick-off more traditional hiring efforts with a Career Changer Opportunity Fair on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wilson Teaching and Learning (2710 E. 11th St. in Tulsa). This recruitment event is an opportunity for community members to explore job opportunities with Tulsa Public Schools and learn about the educator certification process.

Qualified applicants for traditional teaching positions and for the Tulsa Teacher Corps must hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and be able to pass a criminal background check.
