Content:

Students will define the term agriculture, discuss the trends of agriculture in Oklahoma and the world and how it affects the economy, and identify and discuss important people in agriculture, now and then.

Content:

Students will be knowledgeable of the history of the FFA, recite the FFA creed, be able to discuss opportunities available through FFA, conduct a meeting using parliamentary procedure, research, write, and orally present a four minute speech or presentation.

Students will participate in various leadership activities and fundraisers.

Content:

Students will discuss the economic effect agriculture has on our daily lives, define the role of the stock market and Chicago board of trade, determine the difference between commodities contracts, cash market, and options, define terms associated with recordkeeping, and complete a practice exercise using the computerized recordkeeping system.

Content:

Students will be able to list a variety of agricultural products (food and fiber), non-food agricultural products (clothes, medicine, energy, etc), determine quality and species of meat products found in the grocery store, and determine quality of fruits and vegetables.

Content:

Students will be able to identify the parts of a plant, determine types of plants and their uses, define different propagation methods for starting and growing plants, identify necessary nutrient requirements for plants, identify signs of a healthy and unhealthy plant, and identify common weeds, grasses, trees, and selected ornamental plants.

Animal Science and Care of Small Animals

Content:

Students will be able to identify different species of animals, breeds of livestock, external and internal anatomy of selected animals, determine necessary nutrient requirements for animals, and signs of a healthy and unhealthy animal.

Students will complete a variety of projects involving animals including visiting a vet clinic and an SAE experience through FFA.

2 weeks

Content:

Students will be able to identify the areas of study of agricultural power and technology, demonstrate knowledge of shop safety, demonstrate proper safety procedures in the shop, successfully make a satisfactory weld using the SMAW, successfully make a satisfactory weld using the Oxy-gas cutting torch, and successfully complete a small welding project.

Students will complete several small welding projects to demonstrate knowledge of different welds.

Course Syllabus 

Agricultural Sciences I                                                                                                                      9th and 10th                                                                                                           

Rationale and Course Description

This course is designed to introduce students to the world of Agriculture.  Upon completing this course, students will be able to understand and apply basic concepts in animal science, plant science, agriculture mechanics, record keeping, public speaking, and leadership.  It will also give students the opportunity to compete in activities through the FFA.

 How will students learn?

Students will learn through classroom discussion, presentations, demonstrations, projects, and cooperative learning.
