Content:

Students will learn the basics of a computer including component names, setup, uses, and functions.

Students will complete projects that will ask them to apply skills by “purchasing” technology that meets specific requirements.

Students will learn to properly key and format business documents using Microsoft Word.  Skills learned will include editing, formatting, creating tables, merge documents, and automations.

Students will complete the exercises and activities that accompany the textbook.

Students will research a career using OKCIS and will then prepare a group presentation on that career with a career cluster team.

Course Syllabus

Business Technology                                                                                                          9th-12th Grades

Rationale and Course Description

In this course, students will examine changes occurring in today’s office organization and the implementation of electronic technology to facilitate the flow of information through an organization.  Students will be made aware of the changes occurring in job responsibilities as technology becomes more prevalent in business offices.  Special emphasis will be placed on the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills needed in electronic offices.

How will students learn?

Students are expected to meet all course goals listed and be able to demonstrate their understanding of the underlying concepts.  The instruction will be conducted through the use of various instructional strategies including lecture, textbooks, handouts, hands-on exercises using manipulatives, collaborative learning groups, “Being There” experiences, service learning projects, leadership activities, and special projects assigned by the instructor.  Students will work independently and in teams to enable them to learn how to complete projects by themselves and as a team member.  Assignments will require students to draw upon academic skills in reading, writing, and math.

Students will be assessed through projects, daily work, tests, quizzes, time management, and attendance.

Students will use the Learning Microsoft Office 2000 textbook, MicroType Software, Internet, OKCIS software, and various other resources in this course.
