World Cultures Pacing Calendar
Grade 6

NOTE:
Asterisks (*) have been used to identify standards and objectives that must be assessed by the local school district. All other skills may be assessed by the Oklahoma School Testing Program (OSTP).
Book icons (Information Literacy skill) identify Information Literacy skills. Students are best served when these are taught in collaboration and cooperation between the classroom teacher and the library media specialist.


1st Quarter

Standard 2: Use geographic representations to draw conclusions.
2.1 Apply the concepts of scale, orientation, latitude and longitude, and physical regions.
2.2 Compare political, physical, and thematic maps.
2.3 Define, recognize, and locate basic landforms and bodies of water on appropriate maps and globes.

Standard 3: The student will analyze selected cultures which have affected our history.
3.1 Define the characteristics of culture and the role culture played on the development of the world's peoples.


2nd Quarter

Standard 1: Develop and practice the process skills of social studies.
1.1 Locate, gather, and analyze information from primary and secondary sources, such as artifacts, diaries, letters, art, music, literature, newspapers, and contemporary media. Information Literacy skill

Standard 3: Analyze selected cultures which have affected our history.
3.2 Compare and contrast common characteristics of culture, such as language, customs, shelter, diet, traditional occupations, belief systems, and folk traditions. Information Literacy skill
3.3 Evaluate the impact of selected civilizations such as Egypt and Greece on migration and settlement patterns.


3rd Quarter

Standard 1: Develop and practice the process skills of social studies.
1.2 Identify, evaluate, and draw conclusions from different kinds of maps, graphs, charts, diagrams, timeliness and other representations such as photographs and satellite-produced images or computer-based technologies. Information Literacy skill

Standard 3: Analyze selected cultures which have affected our history.
3.3 Evaluate the impact of selected civilizations such as Rome, Mayan, Incan, and Chinese on migration and settlement patterns.


4th Quarter

Standard 1: Develop and practice the process skills of social studies.
1.3 Interpret information from a broad selection of research materials such as encyclopedias, almanacs, dictionaries, atlases, and cartoons. Information Literacy skill

Standard 4: Compare and contrast political and economic systems.
4.1 Identify and describe major world political systems and the role of governmental involvement in such systems (i.e., dictatorships, constitutional monarchies, and representative democracies).
4.2 Identify and describe major economic systems and the role of governmental involvement and individual decision-making within such systems (i.e., traditional, command, and market economies).
