Accommodations, Adaptions, and Modifications

What are they?
These terms can often be confusing to special educators and parents alike.
We know they refer to individualized changes in the student's regular
education program, but the specific definitions can often become
difficult to understand.

Accommodations and Supplementary Aids/Services

Accommodations or supplementary aids and services are defined as supports
or changes that are provided in regular education classes or other education related settings to enable children with disabilities to be educated with nondisabled children to the maximum extent possible.  These services are usually the changes or accommodations made to the student's physical
learning environment.

Some examples of Supplementary Aids and Services include:

  • Modifying the physical setting by using proximity or preferential seating
  • Allowing the use a study carrel
  • Using Assistive technology
  • Modifying grouping arrangements
  • Modifying classroom management procedures
  • Providing assignments or directions in writing
  • Using folders for storing assignments
  • Allowing use of tape recorders or other devices
Modifications and Adaptions
Modifications and adaptions primarily include changes in the administration
of assignments and/or tests in the regular classroom.  Program modifications
for the special education student must be described on the Individualized Education Program (IEP) if these modifications are necessary to assist the
child to advance toward attaining annual goals, to be involved and progress
in the general curriculum, and/or to participate in activities with nondisabled children.

Some examples of Modifications and Adaptions include:

  • Modifying homework assignments
  • Reducing the reading level of tests or assignments
  • Providing word banks for tests
  • Allowing oral responses for assignments
  • Dividing assignments into small sections
  • Shortening the number of items on tests and/or classroom assignments
