The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act defines
Assistive Technology in terms of devices and services.
An Assistive Technology
Device is “any item, piece of equipment, or product
system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf,
modified, or customized, that is used to increase,
maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of
individuals with disabilities.”
Assistive Technology
services are “any service that directly assists an
individual with a disability in the selection,
acquisition or use of an assistive technology device”
(including evaluation, loaning, selecting, training, and
technical assistance.)
Tulsa Public Schools
Assistive Technology (AT) team offers various support
services to teachers and students. The AT team
offers recommendations to the IEP team after consulting,
assessing, or evaluating the student’s ability to access
their education.
Some of these services
include: evaluating and recommending low to high
technology options for students, providing strategies
and /or tools for increasing students’ performance in
the school environment, and training and providing
technical assistance for staff.
