They may not become Dr.
Doolittle, but students can certainly know more about animals after completing
this engaging inquiry-based unit. Students get firsthand experience with 3
animals (dwarf African frogs, fiddler crabs, and millipedes), setting up
classroom habitats for each and caring for them. The learning activities lead
students to observe the animals and compare and contrast them in terms of needs,
habitats, adaptations, and behavior. Unit concludes with students investigating
humans in the same terms, plus planning, conducting, and presenting a behavioral
research project on one of the animals.
