In this inquiry-based unit, students work with a minimum of 16 living organisms (plants, insects, and microbes) to investigate concepts such as life cycle, reproduction, growth, and heredity. Each of the module's 3 sections concludes with a formal assessment; informal assessments are imbedded into the lessons. The unit's Anchor Activity (a research project) guides students to explore the relationship between structure and function in vertebrates.
Part of the Science and Technology Concepts for Middle Schools™ curriculum, this unit is aligned with the National Science Education Standards. One-Class Kit includes a Teacher's Guide, 16 Student Guides, and the consumable and nonconsumable materials needed for one class to complete the unit in 8 to 12 weeks. The Material Set contains additional equipment that's needed if the unit is taught to more than one class each day.

Student Safety Contract

At the first of every school year, each student should be given a copy of this contract.  It must be signed by student, parent or guardian and returned to you.  One copy per student covers all elementary kits.  Keep them on file for the duration of the school year.  The contract is available in both English and Spanish.  You can open and print the English version here and the Spanish version here.
