TPS Offers Free Adult Education

Tulsa Public Schools offers FREE Adult classes to help adults to either prepare for the GED exam or help non-native adult speakers learn English as a second language. Our free classes are available in the morning, afternoon and evening. The classes are dispersed throughout the Tulsa metropolitan area to serve many adults and parents of TPS students who want to improve their livelihood for their families. McKinley's National Anthem Project

McKinley Elementary will be participating in the National Anthem Project. At 9 a.m., Friday, September 14th. Music teacher, Sharon Hatfield, will assemble the students on the playground to sing the National Anthem. The students will assemble in the shape of the state of Oklahoma to honor the 100th birthday of the state. Plans are to take an aerial photograph of the students from the school roof.

Food 4 Kids

Remington Elementary is pleased to be a part of the Food 4 Kids program again this year. This program is offered through the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma partnered with the school. Fifty students are chosen to participate and will receive a backpack with food in it every Friday, beginning Friday, September 7.The type of food will vary from week-to week depending on the availability. The food is collected and distributed by the Food Bank. If the food is eaten and more is needed, then the child must return the backpack on each Monday in order to receive food on the following Friday. The backpack and food is at no cost to the child. The food is intended for the child who receives it and is not to be sold for any reason. This is the third year this program has been in place at Remington and it has been very successful!

Fierce Gridiron Rivals Celebrate Shared Stadium

The Edison Eagles and Memorial Chargers put aside their decades-long rivalry to celebrate the official dedication of the $6M dollar LaFortune Stadium and Sports Complex. Principals from both schools will join TPS Superintendent, Dr. Michael Zolkoski, and Tulsa School Board members on the 50 yard line to cut the ceremonial ribbon. The newly-titled "Mid Town Classic" battle between Edison and Memorial promises to be a highlight of the football season in Tulsa. Friday's pre-game festivities include Memorial's Homecoming Carnival with plenty of activities for students and their families. Come out to LaFortune and see who wins the very first Mid Town Class trophy on Friday night.

West Side Block Party

Celebrate Education with Webster High School at the 4th annual Vision West Block Party this Saturday at Webster High School. Come watch student performances, see Webster’s new cafeteria, visit with more than80 exhibitors, and enjoy a food court featuring local vendors. Students receive free food vouchers from their school. Dignitaries Visit McLain HSST

Eight Japanese college students and their sponsors are in Oklahoma as part of a mission to explore the issue of global warming. Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor Jari Askins will bring the dignitaries to McLain High School for Science and Technology, where students are working on solar energy projects. Zenn, Inc. donated a solar car to McLain for the year, so students could develop a charging station as a class project. Last year, McLain students successfully transformed a Honda Accord to operate on solar energy.

Spanish and French 5th Grade classes will participate in the Ropes Course (with teachers and parents) as a community-building activity. This activity at the beginning of the school year helps students improve their self esteem, while developing cooperation skills that will be beneficial during their last school year at EIS.

Students Share Rich Culture

All Spanish classes (K-5) honor the Hispanic Cultures by presenting a song, a dance or both during Tulsa’s Hispanic Festival Celebration. All performances are presented in the school’s gym. The EIS Ambassadors to Tulsa’s Sister City San Luis Potosí, Mexico will also perform the dance with which they are representing the USA in Mexico.

Dads and Donuts honors Dads and other special guests on Friday, September 21 at 8:00 a.m. Danny Beck, from Danny Beck Chevrolet, will be our guest speaker. Music teacher, Jolynn Sanders, and students will provide special entertainment. Remington PTA will provide gifts for our special guests. Following the presentation, guests are invited to stay and enjoy refreshments with the student they are representing.
