Grimes Elementary School 5th graders get to be farmers for a day, with help from some agricultural experts. Chef Harry and his Mobile Watermelon Unit will be at the school with Oklahoma-grown melons and tasty recipes for the kids.
During Farm to Market, organized by Sodexho, Tulsa Public Schools’ Child Nutrition Service, students get to plant their own fruits and vegetables, take them home and watch them grow. They also learn about worm composting from a master gardener; growing exotic fruits, cotton and more. They’ll even learn how to spin cotton into yarn.
Grimes Elementary is just one of many schools participating in Farm to Market this year. Organizers say it’s an entertaining, hands-on way to teach students about nutrition. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Michael Zolkoski, said of the event, “Many of our students know their food comes from the store or a drive-through window. This is a great way to teach them about the farmers who help to put food on America’s tables.” He says the district’s partnership with Sodexho not only provides TPS students with nourishing meals, but also with valuable lessons about how nutrition factors into a healthy lifestyle.
