Budding artists from Mark Twain Elementary School are on a mission to stimulate local interest in the arts. Parents and students are invited to attend their latest event: a mural dedication at the Tulsa Zoo.
The students, dubbed Art Ambassadors, utilize expressive media—including drawing, painting, poetry and dance —to promote community involvement, service and leadership while learning real-life academic skills. Mark Twain’s ambassadors are enthusiastic and outgoing fourth and fifth graders, and graduates that mentor younger children.
“It’s fun and exciting to have the opportunity to paint at the Tulsa Zoo,” said student Jonathan Newman.
The mural dedication is 9: 15 a.m. on Monday, November 2, in the zoo’s Jaguar Jungle. Attendees must meet at the zoo entrance at 9 a.m. and walk in as a group. No entrance fee is required if you enter with the group. The ceremony begins at 9:15 at the Jaguar Jungle (roar!). Miss Oklahoma Taylor Treat is a featured guest.
The program is the latest in a series of collaborations between the zoo and TPS.
“For years the Tulsa Zoo has been providing educational field trips for TPS students,” said Mark Twain art teacher Beth Howard. “When they contacted Art Ambassadors to create a mural, we were incredibly excited about the opportunity to give back. We hope our mural not only represents the extraordinary capabilities of our students but also the reciprocal relationship we have formed with the Tulsa Zoo.”
