IMPORTANT INFORMATION

This information is presented to help students and parents avoid confusion and have a reference for information you may need during this school year.

OFFICE

Mrs. Waterson has an open door policy for parents or students needing to meet with her.  To assure the time you need, please call ahead for an appointment.  The office phone number is 833-9420.

TIME

Class hours are 8:00 to 2:45 for Kindergarten through fifth grade.  Children should not arrive before 7: 30 and should be picked up by 3:00.

ATTENDANCE

If a student is ill or must be absent from school, the parents are to call the school before 8:30 a.m.  The phone number is 833-9420.  Tardiness is not accepted.  A student is considered tardy if he/she is not in her seat when the bell rings.

One criteria of a student’s success in school is regular and punctual attendance; frequent absences may lead to poor academic work, lack of social development, and possible academic failure.  No single factor may interfere with a student’s progress more quickly than frequent tardiness and absence.

IF YOUR CHILD IS LATE, REMIND HIM/HER TO GO THROUGH THE OFFICE FOR A TARDY SLIP.  This is the only way to mark the student off the absence list for the day

EARLY DEPARTURE

If you need to take your child out of school before 2:45, you must sign that child out in the office.  Students will not be removed from class before your arrival, so please allow time before appointments to come in.  NEVER REMOVE A CHILD DIRECTLY FROM THE CLASSROOM.

VISITORS/VOLUNTEERS

Anyone entering the school for any reason is required to stop in the office first.  This is for the security of all students.

 PARENT INFORMATION AND BULLETINS

Thursday’s are designated as bulletin day, although, occasionally, a bulletin must be sent another day.   THIS IS OUR ONLY WAY OF COMMUNICATING INFORMATION TO ALL PARENTS AT ONCE.  Ask your child for bulletins each Thursday and remind them of their importance of bringing them home.

MESSAGES TO STUDENTS

Please try to make all after-school arrangements with your child before coming to school to avoid confusion and their worry.  We will take only emergency messages to students at the end of the day.

PHONE CALLS

The school phone is for business purposes and is not available to students unless approved by the principal.  Calling students out of class to take a phone call disrupts their learning as well as that of their classmates.  Only in an emergency will a child be called to the office for a phone call.

CHANGE OF INFORMATION

Whenever an address, phone number, emergency contact person or custodial parent information has been changed, notify the office.  This is for the security of your child as well as necessary record information.  (Please call 833-9420 with any changes during the school year.)

ILLNESS

Any student with a temperature of 100° or more is not to be sent to school, even if dosed with a fever reducer.  A contagious child will be sent home to avoid spreading illness in this close environment.

 STUDENT INFORMATION

PERMITS/PASSES

Students should go directly from class to class.  Teachers will give the times when locker stops are allowed.  Permission to come into the office or clinic should be obtained from your teacher.  Tardy slips are obtained in the office when you arrive late.

BACKPACKS/PURSES

Backpacks/purses are to be kept in the locker.   These are considered a safety hazard in the classroom.

LOCKERS

Students may secure their personal belongings in their lockers with a combination lock.  Padlocks are not permitted.  Students should not bring valuable items to school.  Lockers are for coats, backpacks, books and supplies.  Backpacks must be able to fit in the lockers.  Students who consistently have trouble operating a combination lock will be asked to remove the lock until they can proficiently operate the lock.

TOYS

Unless approved by a teacher for show and tell, toys are not permitted at school.  Breaking this rule usually results in the toy being confiscated until the end of the schools year or being lost.

 LOST AND FOUND

A cupboard in the cafeteria hallway holds lost clothing items.  Look here first whenever something is misplaced.  Jewelry, books, glasses and small items are usually turned in at the office.

 CAFETERIA

The cost is $1.70 for child.  Lunch schedules are staggered between 10:45 and 12:25 p.m.  Milk can be purchased separately.

Cafeteria menus are sent home the beginning of each month.  Menus are also printed in the newspaper each week.

You may prepay in the cafeteria so your child does not have to carry (loose) money.  There will be only three charges allowed with no exceptions.  Lunch boxes or sacks should be marked with the student’s name.

Parents may have lunch with their student any day.

STOP BY THE OFFICE FIRST FOR A VISITORS STICKER.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled twice year.  Please make every effort to attend.  If you wish to meet with teachers at other times during the year, please call the office to set up a meeting.

 CLINIC

A full time health assistant provides first aid, illness checks and keeps health records.  Injuries that occur at home should be treated there.  Any child that becomes ill or is injured at school is sent to the clinic.  A parent or designated emergency contact person will be called when it is determined that a child needs to be sent home.  A registered nurse comes one afternoon each week.

Medication that must be taken at school (including pain medication, cough syrups, cough drops, etc.) is to be taken to the clinic in the morning.  A form must be filled out with a parent signature before any medication can be given.

1.   Bring medication in its original container only.

2.    Over the counter medication such as “Tylenol” must be in its original container and appropriate for the age of the child.

3.    AT NO TIME SHOULD STUDENTS CARRY MEDICATION IN A POCKET OR A LUNCH BOX.

4.    Medication can only be given with the legal form on file.  Records of the time and person giving the medication are strictly kept.

5.    Whenever a medication must be taken at school, parents must fill out a permission slip.  These are available in the office or from the clinic.

DRESS CODE

The Tulsa Public School District’s dress code will be strictly enforced throughout the district.  Listed below will be the main areas of concern for Barnard students.  However, this does not include all the areas.  Please contact the school for a copy in its entirety.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
