The
students have just learned about a great opportunity to travel half way
across the world to China. There were about 15 boys trying to go and 25 girls
trying to go. Ultimately only 5 boys and 5 girls would be able to go.
The teachers started meeting every week to decide who gets to go and we had
one meeting during this month with all students participating to learn
the basics. Every one
had to answer some questions on the computer like what would you do
there, why do you what to go, and why do you deserve to go.

After tons of waiting we finally
got the letters in the mail saying if we got to go. The students who received
the letter were Girls: Julie Griffin, Molly Lyons, Sarah
Abuali, and Jennifer Ratliff; and the Boys: Tyler Devereux, Timmy Seitz,
Corben Rosenthal, Tim Bloomfield, and Joey Price. After receiving the
letter the students were very excited! About a week after they decided
the teachers who would be going, they are: Mrs. Bradshaw, Mrs. Lasker,
and Mrs. Murray.

We had our first meeting
with only the students going and the rest of the China Committee
discussing different topics such as The cost, when we would be going,
and things we would do there. In this meeting they told us we were not
going to go because of the SARS outbreak. They explained to us we
would be going later on when the SARS outbreak is over.

Chinese Lessons at the OU Schusterman Center. This class
lasted 4 hours
a day 9:00- 1:00. We took these Chinese Lessons 5 days a week. Before
these classes started we had to figure out carpools and get directions.
During each class
every day we had a 5 minute break after every hour to

We got our
schedules for our Chinese Classes. We learned the exact dates we will be
going to China.
We started selling pickles, pop, and popcorn after school to raise money
for our trip.
So far we have raised an average of $200.00 from the sales and we are
hoping to get more money.
We learned we would receive $225.00 for our trip from the grants we applied
for.

We
started our Chinese Classes here at Byrd, and we learned about
photography, journals,
and the geography of China. We were assigned our roommates for the
wonderful hotels
we will be staying at in Shanghai and Xi'An. On January 15, 2004 we are
selling pickles after
school and we will have a meeting on geography with Mrs. Murray after we
sell pickles.
Last Thursday we had a class with Mrs. Bradshaw and learned how to take
photographs,
put journals together, and what kind of cameras to take. In Mrs. Lasker's
Class we have been
looking at pictures of China, and their monuments. She has also told us
what to take
pictures of such as take a picture of the sign before you take the
picture of the
monument so we remember what it is.
