Summer Enrichment for the 2007-2008
Carver Sixth Graders

Reading is an integral part of the academics at Carver Middle School.  It is important for students to continue to read independently over the summer.  Numerous studies indicate a direct correlation between a student’s success at school and the amount of time they spend reading independently.

6th Grade Language Arts students are required to read a minimum of three of the books listed below over the summer.  Students will be tested over their reading selections during the first two weeks of the school year.  Every student will participate in a group activity designed around his or her reading selections.

DID YOU KNOW . . .

Middle School Reading - Important! - Important!

Research says that most middle school students stop reading in middle school even if they were readers in elementary school.  Students begin independent reading again late in high school.  If we are aware of this, hopefully, we can structure our students’ lives to include regular reading.  We certainly can’t afford for our students to quit reading independently for several years!

Research also indicates that it is important for students to have opportunities to choose what they read.  The idea is for our students to discover a love of reading and to encourage lifelong learning.  Summer is an excellent time to make the discovery that reading can be recreational!! (Many students believe that they don't like to read, and the truth is that they don't like what they have read so far . . . textbooks, books that were "good for them" that someone else chose.)  Students may still need help identifying and locating books that are of interest to them.
