Acronyms

An acronym is a special, fun abbreviation.
It can be used to help you remember something.

HOMES
is an acronym for the names of the Great Lakes.
They are Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.

Notice that an acronym is a word that you create from
the first letters of the words you want to remember.

(An acronym doesn't have to be a real word at all. )

Remember, an acronym is a special, fun abbreviation.
Sometimes an acronym is just used as an abbreviation or shortcut
because it's faster than saying the big, long name of something.

When people use an acronym just for a shortcut, eventually, over time,
they sometimes forget what the acronym stands for!

Think:
Isn't it funny that an acronym can
wind up helping you remember something,
AND
it could help you forget something too!

Here are some acronyms:

ROTC
NASCAR
OSHA
Radar
CD-ROM
DOS
BIOS
RAM
FAQ
NAPA
scuba
UNICEF
LAN
WAN
zip (code)
VISTA
Sometimes an acronym starts out as a made-up word.
It is used so much that it becomes a new, "real" word! Scuba and Radar
are examples of acronyms that became real words.
