Welcome to Fifth Grade!

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to 5th grade.  We are so glad you are in our classes!  This year we will be working on the core subjects in homeroom.  Mrs. Blank will teach art and science and Mrs. Rucker will teach social studies.  We will travel every afternoon to these classes to prepare for moving/traveling in 6th grade.

Special classes and their teachers include:  Music – Miss Parker Library/Computers – Mrs. Breedlove

P. E. – Mrs. Nutter           Specials – Mrs. Long & Mrs. Wilkie

Fifth grade is a very busy and exciting year.  It is packed with leadership opportunities like classroom announcers, Student Council, peer mediators.  We also have to prepare for the Writing test in February and the Criterion Reference Test (CRT) in early April.  We will have to push hard to finish all our objectives in the first three quarters.

Fifth graders will have more privileges and opportunities for leadership (as long as they follow our school agreements).  You will soon learn about the many after school activities available this year.  We hope you will be able to take advantage of one or more of them.  We will also provide “clubs” during the school day at Chouteau this year.  We will offer clubs in areas such as chess, newspaper, etc.  These will begin in 2-3 weeks.

We have attached a brochure, enrollment form, free lunch application, insurance packet, and an information sheet.  We hope they will answer most of your questions about this year.  We are interested in your thoughts, so please fill out the forms and add comments before returning the sheets.

We are looking forward to a great year.  Come by anytime for a visit or contact us if you have questions or concerns.  We will let you know as soon as our Back to School night has been scheduled.

                                                                                     Sincerely,

                                                                    Mrs. L. Rucker & Mrs. K. Blank

P.S.   PARENT HOMEWORK:  Please let us know that you have read all of the attached sheets with your child by returning the enrollment form, questionnaire, and signature section of these sheets.

Tomorrow would be great!

PLANNER / ENVELOPE / HOME PACKETS

We have planners again this year.  It should be carried in the black notebook everyday to class and home.  You can check it for class work and homework assignments.  It should be completely filled out everyday and needs a parent signature on Wednesday.  An envelope (HOME PACKET) with notes and graded papers will also be sent home on Wednesday.  Please let me know that you received the papers by signing the envelope and returning it to school.

 TESTS

All tests and any graded paper below a “C” should be corrected and returned to school.  Extra points will be added to the grade if this is done correctly and on time.  Remember:  math problems must show the work, not just answers.

 HOMEWORK / MAKE UP WORK

Fifth graders should spend 50 minutes on homework per night.  Assignments will be written in the planner.  Homework is added practice or an extension of class work.  Students should understand the assignments and try to complete work independently. They may have your help when needed.

Work not done in class for any reason will be added to the homework.  Extra time will be allotted when needed.

If a student is absent more than one day, work may be requested.

 AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES / CLUBS

We will have several wonderful activities after school this year.  You will soon receive information about classes in keyboards, Camp Fire, and more.  I hope you will sign up for several things.  Clubs will start in a couple weeks.  They will meet the first hour on Fridays.  You will get more information soon.

 READING LOG / CHARTS

Each child will have a reading log in their black notebook.  He/she needs to keep track of the daily reading at home and school.  Please sign this log when the reading is done at home.  Feel free to read aloud with your child during this time.  We will visit our great library twice a week and I have hundreds of paperback books that may be checked out.  We will start the Reading Counts comprehension tests on the computers soon.

 DISCIPLINE

Chouteau is a very safe and secure place.  We believe students learn best in a structured, respectful environment.  We want every child to develop a good self-esteem, enjoy coming to school, interact politely with others, and show appropriate behaviors.

My discipline procedures include:

1.     a verbal warning to the child

2.     a problem-solving discussion to find other ways to act or solve problem

3.     time out in hall (15 minutes) with short contract to be signed by parent

4.     desk moved away from other students, and free time spent sitting out

5.     request for parent conference

6.     refer problem to Dr. Burk

Discipline slips will be written whenever the problem requires more immediate attention than the above procedure.

                                                                             Mrs. K. Blank

Cut on this line and return signed portion as soon as possible.
