Learning Community Driven by Tribes (MAPS)
As is the basis of Tulsa Public School's programs, Tribes is a research-based plan
designed to foster community
through
the Seven Learning Community Guidelines of:
Mutual Respect Attentive Listening Trustworthiness Truthfulness
Appreciations Right to Pass Personal Best
When applied, Tribes aligns with the Tulsa Model producing an environment full of
acceptance and virtually free of ridicule. When children feel comfortable enough
to try, they will learn.
Tribes learning communities help students discover who they are and what gifts they
have, allowing them to use these gifts as tools for learning and further self-discovery.
Further, students learn about each other, along with the adults, and begin to
appreciate everyone's unique abilities. Through knowing one another and
capitalizing on one another's abilities, students, staff and members of the
community are better able to collaborate on self-directed, inquiry learning,
strengthening learning and raising test scores.
The Tribes process draws upon the knowledge of multiple intelligences and cognitive
theory while utilizing cooperative learning and personal reflection. The most current
model, designed for middle school, takes into account the unique developmental
characteristics and needs of the early adolescent years.
