EDISON SCREAMIN' EAGLES CLASS 4A STATE JAZZ CHAMPIONS!

The Edison Preparatory School SCREAMIN’ EAGLES Jazz Band were named Class 4A State Champions at the O.S.S.A.A. State Jazz Championships held at Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond, April 25, 2007. Bixby High School was named as first runner-up, with Carl Albert High School (Midwest City) as second runner-up.
The Screamin’ Eagles Jazz Band members include: Danny Copeland-lead alto, Brett Cox-second alto, Josh Cooper-first tenor, Brittany Copeland-second tenor, Tanner Bunch-baritone sax, Patrick Allred-lead trombone, Taylor Johnson-second trombone, Katherine Alberty-third trombone, Eric Noble-lead trumpet, Ben Cowen-second trumpet, Taylour Bunch-third trumpet, Natalie Turner-piano, Carmen Leonard-piano and vocals soloist, Amanda Mozingo-electric bass, Harvey Crowder-string bass, Daniel Lutz and Cassie Caldwell-drumset, and Alexandra Stewart-guitar.
The Screamin’ Eagles are under the direction of Joe Metzer. This is Mr. Metzer’s 4th state jazz championship as a director. He has had state champion jazz bands at Muskogee (2), East Central, and now Edison.
The Screamin’ Eagles repetiore included: The Buckethead Shuffle featured soloists Josh Cooper on flute, Taylor Johnson on trombone, Brett Cox on alto sax, Eric Noble on trumpet, and Danny Copeland on alto sax. Take A Risk featured Carmen Leonard as vocal soloist and Ben Cowen on trumpet. Second Chances featured Danny Copeland on soprano sax. Lester Leaps In featured Josh Cooper on tenor sax, Patrick Allred on trombone, Ben Cowen on trumpet, Natalie Turner on piano, Amanda Mozingo on bass, and Daniel Lutz on drumset.
The judging panel at this competition included both professional musicians as well as successful college jazz directors. The judging panel for the 4A jazz championships were Vince Norman (staff arranger, US Army Jazz Ambassadors), Kris Berg (professional jazz arranger, Alfred Music Publishing), and Bill Snodgrass (director of jazz studies, University of Texas at Arlington).
The Edison Jazz Festival was a huge success with 14 Oklahoma jazz bands participating. Best band overall was Verdigris High School directed by Euell Hanna. Edison Jazz Band was the host band and performed for critique only.
The Edison Wind Ensemble competed at State Band Contest on Tuesday,
April 10, 2007 at Jenks HS, and were rewarded in both concert performance
and sight-reading with Excellent (II) ratings from our panel of 6 judges.
The American Classics Music Festival in San Antonio was a HUGE
success. Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and Jazz Band were each awarded Division
I "SUPERIOR" ratings. The Orchestra and Wind Ensemble were also awarded
"Outstanding Performance" trophies. Theses are given by a unanimous vote of
the judges. Senior lead alto and soprano saxophone soloist Danny Copeland
received one of only four "Outstanding Soloist" medallions.
Congratulations to the following Edison HS Instrumental Music students for their placement in the Tulsa Public Schools Metro Honor Jazz Band: Alto Saxophone Two - Danny Copeland, Tenor Saxophone One - Joshua Cooper, Trombone One - Taylor Johnson, Trombone Three - Katherine Alberty, Bass Trombone - Patrick Allred, Trumpet One - Eric Noble, Trumpet Two - Ben Cowen, Trumpet Three - Taylour Bunch, and Trumpet Four - Zhenya Yevtushenko.
Congratulations to members of the Edison Advanced (Chamber) Orchestra. They received Superior (I) ratings in concert performance at the Tulsa Public Schools Orchestra Festival held at Edison on Thursday, February 8.
Congratulations to these same students for receiving Excellent (II) ratings in both concert performance and sight reading at the OSSAA State Orchestra Contest held at Edmond Sante Fe High School in Edmond on Thursday, February 15. Eric Noble, senior trumpet player from Edison Preparatory School was named 8th chair trumpet in the All OMEA Band. He won this chair competing against over 80 other trumpet players from across the state of Oklahoma. The All OMEA (Oklahoma Music Educators Association) Band will perform in mid January at the state convention.
Congratulations to the Edison Screamin’ Eagles Jazz Band for winning 1st place at the Verdigris Jazz Festival on Friday, December 15. The Screamin’ Eagles were at the top of class 4A and scored higher than previous state champion Coweta Jazz Band as well as rival Claremore. Joshua Cooper, Danny Copeland, Carmen Leonard, Daniel Lutz, and Natalie Turner were named outstanding soloists for the competition as well.
Congratulations to the Edison Screamin’ Eagles Jazz Band for being chosen to perform at this year's OK/IAJE Fall Workshop on November 5&6. Screamin' Eagle Director, Joe Metzer, was chosen to lead the Educators Big Band that performed at the workshop as well.
