 | Music at Grissom begins with
instruction in the proper use of the perfect musical instrument (a child's
singing voice) and in instruction and practice of the various parts of
music (melody, harmony, tone color, form, dynamics, tempo, rhythm, and
beat), students are involved in activities coordinating movement,
instruments, singing and listening. These activities focus on
exposure to musical exemplars from diverse cultures, effectively
integrating the study of geography and social studies with the study of
music. Each classroom engages in the various roles of the musical
organization and is directed toward the acceptance of the concepts of
cooperation and creativity.

Students are actively involved in the study
and practice of reading and writing musical notation (melodic and
rhythmic) and in coordinating their efforts through the use of the voice,
as well as Orff instruments and drums (in 1st through 5th grades);
additionally 4th and 5th graders are guided through instruction and
practice in the use of violins and recorders. As an Oklahoma A+
school and as a recipient of the ArtsPower award, Grissom shows evidence
of a strong commitment to the arts; this commitment is reflected in the
enrichment experiences afforded Grissom students. They are
encouraged to believe that the music classroom is "a teaching studio: --a
place where they practice and study to develop the skills and attributes
necessary to make of themselves musically expressive artists. |
