LANIER DISCIPLINE POLICY

The Tulsa Public Schools accepts the challenge of providing high quality educational programs that prepares students to compete in modern society. Lanier Elementary provides opportunities for the development of skills, acquisition of knowledge, and formation of desirable attitudes. We also create an environment that is safe, secure, and conducive to learning. Unfortunately, sometimes students exhibit behavior that prevents themselves and others from learning. The Tulsa Public Schools accepts the obligation to assist these students with a fair and consistent discipline program that provides opportunities for students to change undesirable behavior while protecting the rights of the majority.

We believe that no child has the right to be disruptive and interfere with the learning process. A strong line of communication and support between the parents and school is essential if our school is to have an effective discipline policy.

Students that choose to disrupt classroom activities will be counseled by the classroom teacher, counselor or principal. If this intervention does not alter the child’s behavior, alternative methods will be attempted. The range of intervention may be from having loss of privileges (loss of playtime), assignment to the school ‘time-out’ room or suspension from school.

If a student is referred to the principal with a "Behavior Referral" this will start the discipline cycle, which is a four-step process.

Step 1: A referral is given to the student which indicates inappropriate behavior.

Step 2: A referral is sent home and a conference must be held with the parent/guardian within 3 school days regarding your child’s behavior. Teacher will have the option of assigning a 30 minute after-school detention.

Step 3: A third referral will result in your child being sent to "In-School Detention" for up to one day.

Step 4: A fourth referral could result in a SUSPENSION of up to 3 days. The parent/guardian must contact the school to schedule a conference to discuss a plan for improved behavior. The conference must be held before your child may return to classes.

"In-School Detention" means the student is removed from his/her classroom setting for part or all of a school day and assigned to a designated area of the building. A staff member will supervise this area and strict rules will be adhered to during this time. Misbehavior in detention or unsatisfactory completion of detention could result in suspension.

Some offenses carry more severe penalties than others. Possession of a dangerous weapon, physical threats, and violence are some of the more critical offenses a student can commit.

It is a felony offense to have a gun within one thousand feet of a public or private school. Charges will be filed to the full extent of the law against those who violate this regulation.

All discipline will be in accordance with the Tulsa Public Schools Code of Student Conduct guidelines.

Report cards are issued at the close of each quarter for grades 1-5; kindergarten report cards are issued at the end of each semester. Students in grades K-2 will receive the letter grades E,S,I or N on their report cards. Students in grades 3-5 will receive the letter grades A,B,C,D or U for core classes and S,N,U,E for special classes (i.e. art or physical education).

Report cards also indicate social attitudes and study habits as well as objective mastery checklists related to Tulsa Public Schools’ Integrated Core Curriculum.

ATTENDANCE

Oklahoma public schools are in session a minimum of 180 days. Parents, by law, are accountable for their child’s attendance. Children may be excused from school because of illness, death in the family, or religious holidays.

Pleasure trips are classified as unexcused absences, and it is the responsibility of the student to make up his/her schoolwork. He/she may want to ask a friend to keep assignments for each subject. Teachers are not expected to help with makeup work for unexcused absences.

If a child is going to be out of school for any reason, the school should be notified of the absence by 8:30 a.m.

TARDINESS

Whenever a student arrives at school after 8:00 a.m. he/she must attain a tardy permit from the office. Parents, we encourage you to have your children at school on time each day. Teachers are not expected to repeat entire lessons for tardy students.

EARLY DISMISSAL

Parents wishing a student to be released from school early must sign them out through the office. If you are having someone else pick your child up, they must be listed on the student enrollment sheet. If someone who is not on the student enrollment sheet is to pick up your child; a signed note from you must be sent to the office. You will then be contacted by phone to verify the identity of the person picking up your child. Your child will not be released without written and verbal consent.

RIDING BICYCLES TO SCHOOL

Students who ride bikes are asked to walk their bicycle on school grounds. A bicycle is considered a vehicle of transportation and therefore is subject to the same rules and regulations as an automobile. We suggest that a strong chain and lock be used to keep the bicycle from being taken from the rack. The school will not be responsible for the loss of bicycles.

TELEPHONE AND ADDRESS CHANGES

Please notify the school immediately if there is a change in your address, telephone number, baby-sitter, or person to contact in an emergency. This information is very important in case your child becomes ill or injured. We must have a current emergency number for all children at all times.

INJURY

Should your child be injured during school hours he/she will be cared for temporarily and you will be notified. We can only render simple first aid at school. If emergency medical attention is necessary and we are unable to reach the parents, your family doctor will be called or your child will be taken to the emergency room. Information concerning available accident insurance will be sent home with the children. The school cannot be financially responsible for medical, dental, ambulance or hospital service. The school’s responsibility ends when the child has been taken to the physician or hospital.

CAFETERIA

Lunch and breakfast is served in the cafeteria. Breakfast is served from 7:30 a.m. – 7:50 a.m. Parents are urged to purchase lunch credits so that children do not have to carry money each day and risk losing it. In emergencies lunch may be charged. Charges are limited to three.

If your child brings his/her lunch remember not to put candy or pop in their lunch. Also, we discourage trading food items at lunch. We appreciate your support in this area. Parents are always invited to have lunch with their children, but remember to check in at the office when you arrive for a visitor’s pass.
