Fifth Grade
is
a very exciting and busy year for students at Marshall. From the very
beginning, the focus is on mastery of all four basic mathematical
operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), and
deeper exploration into the world of fractions, decimals, percentages,
and algebraic functions!
Reading skills acquired in the previous
grades are strengthened, with extended emphasis on comprehension and
fluency. Vocabulary studies reach back to the Greek and Latin “word
roots” common to many modern English words. Writing skills are
reinforced and practiced regularly as the students prepare for the
midwinter State Writing Test.
Through our Social Studies activities,
our fifth graders journey back in time as we investigate the Early
Native American cultures, examine the exploration and colonization of
the “New World”, and experience the birth of our nation through the
American Revolutionary period.
Fifth grade students gain first hand
experience with government through Student Council, which meets
bi-weekly to discuss a variety of issues, and initiate student-driven
service projects.
A good deal of attention is placed on
“what’s next” as the students prepare to promote from elementary school
to middle school. During the first semester, several “magnet” middle
schools send representatives to visit with the 5th graders to inform
them of the various alternatives
available to them for the coming years
with Tulsa Public Schools.
Our primary motto in 5th
grade is that “we are so much smarter than we thought we were”, a
realization that comes to fruition as the students grow, achieve, and,
finally, promote on to the greater challenges that await them in the
coming years.
