ACT

The first national ACT test for 2008-2009 is scheduled for October 25th.  The only option now available for this test is stand-by testing.  Cost $71.00.  The next test for which the basic $31.00 fee applies is December 13th. (Fee waivers are available; see Mrs. Gaddis).  Registration packets are available in the Counseling Center or you may obtain additional information about the ACT Program and register online at www.act.org.

 

SAT

The next SAT and SAT Subject Tests for 2008-2009 are scheduled for November 1st.  Cost $68.00.  Late registration deadline this Friday, October 10th.  The next test for which the basic $45.00 fee applies is December 6th (Fee waivers are available; see Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center.).  Obtain additional information about the SAT Program in the Counseling Center or register online at www.collegeboard.com

 

TEST PREP ON OKCOLLEGESTART.ORG

Every student can build skills and confidence before taking the ACT by utilizing the interactive features on OKcollegestart’s Test Prep.  The Test Prep feature on OKcollegestart.org contains: practice tests with real ACT questions in English, Reading, Math and Science Reasoning; interactive practice sessions that tell you how you are doing; a vocabulary builder that contains 2,000 words; and practice essays for the optional ACT writing test with real-time scoring.

 

FAFSA4CASTER

Parents of all senior students will need to file a FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in order to qualify for financial aid.  Take advantage of the FAFSA4caster website and learn about the financial aid process, gain early awareness of aid eligibility and much more.  Go to the FAFSA website at www.fafsa.ed.gov to find the FAFSA4caster link.

 

BISHOP KELLEY COLLEGE NIGHT

Tonight, Monday, October 6th, 6:30 -8:00 p.m., you are invited to participate in the Bishop Kelly College Night, where over 75 colleges, universities, military branches, and technical institutes will be in attendance in the small gym at 3905 S. Hudson Ave. (near 41st St. & I-44).

 

THE SIMON ESTES EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. COLLEGE PLANNING SEMINAR

Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7th, in the Great Room in the Allen Chapman Activity Center at the University of Tulsa, the Simon Estes Educational Foundation, Inc. is presenting an information session at 7:00 p.m. on financing a college education, followed by a panel discussion on medicine and engineering from 7:30 – 8:30.  This program was created to address the concerns The Simon Estes Foundation, Inc. has regarding the allure of these professions to uninitiated students versus the realistic rigor of a most demanding curricula. The format will feature two separate panels of specialists offering insight into their particular field.  An opportunity for students to ask questions will be included.  Representatives from local colleges and universities will be available to talk to parents about college applications, scholarships, course work, and financial aid.  This symposium is free. THE WILLIAM H. AND ELIZABETH GRAY DANFORTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM AT WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY (St. Louis, MO) – The Danforth Scholars Program at Washington University in St. Louis honors the student who embraces high ideals, whose life choices are guided by personal integrity, selflessness, a commitment to community, and a dedication to leadership and academic excellence.   Danforth Scholars may receive full- or partial-tuition scholarships.  The scholarship is renewed each year for the duration of the degree program, provided the student maintains academic progress and upholds the high standards of character required of those in the program.  Obtain additional information and a nomination form from Mrs. Gaddis.  Nomination deadline October 15th.

 

TULSA LATINA BUSINESS WOMEN’S SCHOLARSHIP

The Tulsa Latina Business Women’s group is partnering with Tulsa Community Foundation to provide a $750 scholarship to Latina high school seniors pursuing a post graduate education.  Tulsa Latina Business Women’s purpose is to assist in promoting education, community involvement, professional advancement and leadership development for the improvement of the young Latina’s cultural quality of life.  Their goal is to prepare high school Latinas in achieving their post secondary and career goals.  Obtain additional information and an application from Mrs. Gaddis.  Application deadline October 20th.

 

CONGRESSIONAL STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

The Congressional Student Leadership Conference (CSLC) is a college-accredited and NASSP-approved academic-based leadership program for promising high school students.  Each conference is presented by a distinguished faculty and combines challenging academics with hands-on experiential learning which inspire and empower students to reach their full leadership potential.  Students enjoy educational site visits and attend special briefings.  In recent years, students have met with an incredible array of global leaders including members of Congress, Ambassadors, White House and State Department officials, and respected leaders in law, medicine, business, and other disciplines.  See Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center before October 27th to have your name included on the nomination form.

 

COCA-COLA SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Since the program’s inception in 1986, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has awarded more than 4,000 exceptional high school students $35 million in scholarships to attend college.  Scholars are selected based upon academic achievement, their capacity to lead, and their hours of dedicated community service.  High school seniors are eligible to apply for $3 million in college scholarships: 250 awards are presented annually with 50 scholarships for $20,000 and 200 scholarships for $10,000.  To apply, access the online application at www.coca-colascholars.org; click on Coca-Cola Four Year Award for Seniors.  Deadline October 31st

 

SENIOR EVENTS @ PITTSBURG STATE UNIVERSITY (Pittsburg, KS)

Pittsburg State University is hosting two visit events for high school seniors during the fall semester:

Rumble in the Jungle Senior Saturday is scheduled for November 1st.  Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Academic Fair, campus tour and lunch.  Plus, the Gorillas will be in action on the gridiron and students and their guests are encouraged to attend (one complimentary ticket to each high school senior).

College of Arts and Sciences and College of Education Senior Day is November 8th.

These special days focus on the academic programs at Pitt State.  Students and their parents will have the opportunity to interact with faculty and current students in their areas of interest and discuss the opportunities available.  A tour of campus and lunch will also be included.

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM @ RANDOLPH COLLEGE (Lynchburg, VA)

Obtain a nomination form from Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center for the prestigious Presidential Scholars Program at Randolph College.  Through this program, the College recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership qualities that exemplify Randolph students.  Nomination deadline November 1st.

 

THE RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM

Established in 1996, the Ron Brown Scholar Program awards scholarships to academically talented, highly motivated African American students who plan to pursue undergraduate degrees full time.  The program honors the late Ronald H. Brown, Secretary of Commerce during the Clinton administration, and is funded entirely through the CAP Charitable Foundation, a private family foundation dedicated to education, the arts, and the environment.  To date, 241 students have been named Ron Brown Scholars and awarded scholarships totaling $40,000 for each student ($10,000 per year for four years).  Scholars are also provided with the nurturing and mentorship to succeed and flourish in college and beyond.  Obtain additional information and an application from Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center.  Deadline November 1st.

 

 

THE VOICE OF DEMOCRACY AUDIO-ESSAY CONTEST

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Ladies Auxiliary sponsors the Voice of Democracy audio-essay contest for high school students that annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships.  Besides competing for the top scholarship prize of $30,000, as well as other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $30,000, each VFW Department’s first-place winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.  The 2008-2009 theme is “Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans Benefits Today’s Youth By . . .”  Entry deadline November 1st.  Obtain additional information from Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center.

 

EMORY UNIVERSITY(Atlanta, GA) SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Emory University is pleased to invite nominations for the Emory Scholars Program, one of the most prestigious merit-based scholarship programs in American higher education.  Emory Scholar awards span four years of undergraduate study and range from two-thirds tuition to full tuition, room, board, and fees.  While at Emory, scholars may participate in an extensive program of educational enrichment including independent research,; they may receive stipends to enjoy cultural and social events; they may use awards to study abroad during the school year; and in their summers, they may participate in diverse service-learning opportunities.  Nominated students should have outstanding records of academic achievement, possess extra-ordinary personal qualities, and have made significant contributions to their class, their school, and their community. EMORY UNIVERSITY GOIZUETA BUSINESS SCHOOL SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Emory University’s (Atlanta, GA) Goizueta Business School, recently ranked by BusinessWeek as the fifth best undergraduate business program in the U.S., is seeking nominations for its Goizueta Scholars Program.  The Goizueta Scholars award will support four years of undergraduate study, including study-abroad options, and will range from two-thirds of tuition to full tuition and fees.  Goizueta Scholars will have to opportunity to enroll in special freshman and sophomore business scholar seminars, to participate in an extensive array of leadership and professional activities, and to interact with some of the most admired business executives in the world.  The program is small and highly selective.  In addition to seeking students with superior academic credentials, successful nominees will have a demonstrated interest in business, as evidenced by engagement in entrepreneurial activities, participation in internships, membership in business clubs, and/or involvement in business-related conferences, competitions, and similar offerings.  Leadership and community service are also important components in the selection process, and candidates who bring diverse perspectives and backgrounds are of special interest.  Obtain additional information and a nomination form from Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center.  Deadline for receipt of the student’s nomination form and Emory application is November 1st.

 

BUBBLE WRAP COMPETITION FOR YOUNG INVENTORS

Sponsored by Sealed Air Corporation and administered by the National Museum of Education, this contest encourages students to demonstrate creativity and ingenuity by creating an invention that incorporates Bubble Wrap cushioning.  Three finalists will win a three-day trip to New York City, where the grand prize winner will be announced on Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day, January 26, 2009.  The grand prize winner will receive a $10,000 savings bond, while the second and third place winners will receive $5,000 and $3,000 respectively, in savings bonds.  For more information, a complete list of requirements, and to apply visit www.nmoe.org/bubblewrap.  Deadline November 3rd.

 

NATIONAL READY MIXED CONCRETE ASSOCIATION (NRMCA) HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST – For the ninth year, the Oklahoma Ready Mixed Concrete Association (ORMCA) will again be sponsoring the annual National Ready Mixed Concrete Association High School Essay Contest.  The winner of the national contest will be flown, expenses paid, to NRMCA’s convention in Orlando, FL to receive their award.  Possible themes: concrete’s benefits to society; how concrete affects the environment; using concrete to build homes, commercial buildings, bridges and roads.  Essays should demonstrate a student’s awareness of concrete’s role as a building material in homes, commercial buildings, streets and highways, parking lots, etc.  Essays will be judged on content and writing ability (grammar, style, clarity, etc.) Entries must be typed, double-spaced and not exceed 600 words.  Obtain addition information from Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center.  Deadline November 7th.

 

THE PASSION FOR FASION COMPETITION

THE OKLAHOMA FOUNDATION FOR EXCELLENCE 2009 ACADEMIC ALL-STATE AWARDS

The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence is a privately-funded statewide nonprofit organization created to recognize and encourage academic excellence in Oklahoma’s public schools.  The Foundation recognizes one hundred outstanding public high school seniors through the selection of Academic All-State scholars.  Each student will receive a $2,000 scholarship and will be honored at the Academic Awards Banquet.  An Academic All-State scholar is a student who has demonstrated academic excellence.  Eligibility requirements include a composite ACT score of at least 30 on a national testing day or a combined SAT Critical Reading and Math score of at least 1340 on a national testing day.  In addition to the minimum criteria, students will be evaluated on the basis of their leadership abilities, motivation, and character.  The student’s contributions to the improvement of school and community will also be considered.  Obtain additional information and nomination materials from Mrs. Gaddis.  Nomination materials must be postmarked on or before November 28th.

 

THE VISUAL ARTS FRESHMAN SCHOLARSHIP @ THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS (Lawrence, KS)

The Visual Arts Scholarship is available to any high school graduate who will be an incoming freshman in the School of Fine Arts.  The Scholarship is a one-time-only, non-renewable monetary reward applied towards tuition and fees incurred as a freshman.  To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be admitted to the School of Fine Arts by December 1st, answer the three application essay questions, and submit a portfolio for review.  The student will also need to meet at least two of the following criteria: cumulative GPA of at least 3.0; top 20% of graduating class; composite score of 22 or above on the ACT.  The selection decision will be based upon portfolio and essay submissions.  Obtain additional information from Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center.

 

LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE

“Letters about Literature” is a national reading and writing contest sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, the Oklahoma Center for the Book, and Target.  Students can enter by writing a letter to an author, explaining how one of the author’s books changed the student’s view of the world or of themselves.  State winners will receive a $50 Target Gift Card and cash prizes.  Six national winners will receive a $500 Target Gift Card, plus a grant of $10,000 for their school or community library.  Twelve national runners-up will receive a $100 Target Gift Card and a grant of $1,000 for their school or library.  For more information and entry forms, go to www.loc.gov/letters or contact Bill Young, Public Information Manager, Oklahoma Department of Libraries at 405-522-3562.  Entry deadline December 6th.

 

ALL-INK.COM COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

All-ink.com is offering up to $5,000 in scholarships to qualified students (minimum 2.5 GPA) who submit a 50-200 word essay about who has had the greatest impact on their life and a 50-200 word essay on what they hope to achieve in their personal and professional life after completing college.  Complete your application online by December 31st.

 

GAIA COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

Gaia Community provides an oasis for those committed to waking up, listening to our deepest calling, and living the lives we were meant to live while empowering and inspiring others to do the same.  In this spirit, they’re offering a $1,000 scholarship to those two individuals with the most inspiring answers to three crucial questions: What is your purpose? What do you love, and how do (or will) your actions demonstrate this? THE ANNE FORD SCHOLARSHIP

The Anne Ford Scholarship is a $10,000 award given to a high school senior with an identified learning disability (LD) who will be pursuing a four-year undergraduate degree.  To be eligible for the Anne Ford Scholarship, an applicant must: have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale; demonstrate financial need; and provide most current documentation of an identified learning disability.  The ideal candidate is a high school senior who: can articulate his/her learning disability, understands how LD affects his/her life, and recognizes the importance of self-advocacy; is committed to completing a four-year college degree and has begun to set realistic career goals; has demonstrated perseverance and embraces new opportunities; has a well-rounded perspective shaped by experiences in school, in the community, and with family and friends; believes in contributing to society in ways that increase the opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities; and will feel comfortable serving as a role model and spokesperson for others who struggle with LD.  Obtain additional information from Mrs. Gaddis or from your Resource Teacher.  Deadline December 31st.

 

THE GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Milinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding low income African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest.  Student eligibility requirements include: must be a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the U.S.; have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale; and have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities. CREATE-A-GREETING-CARD SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST

Design a greeting card for The Gallery Collection®, Prudent Publishing, Inc. and submit your work to be judged.  First prize of $10,000 will be given for the winning entry.  Obtain an application from Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center or apply directly at www.gallerycollection.com/scholarship.  Deadline January 15, 2009.

 

BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIPS @ THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI (Columbia, MO)

The Walton Scholarship is worth $7,000 per year and can be used for a total of eight semesters.  This need-based award is geared towards high potential students with an ACT Composite score in the 27-36 range.  An eligible candidate should also be in the top 10% of their graduating class.  Students applying for this scholarship should have an interest in retail; recipients will be required to work a part-time job (at least 10 hrs./week) in the retail industry.

The Trulaske Scholarship is a need-based scholarship and is worth $7,000 which can be used for a total of eight semesters.  This award is geared towards students with an ACT Composite score in the 22-27 range.  An eligible candidate should also be outside the top 10% of the graduating class, but in the top two-thirds.

The Harry and Ann Cornell Leadership Program will allow students to be involved in a series of honor-type experiences and extracurricular activities aimed at developing leadership competencies.  Eligibility requirements include: 28 ACT or 1250 SAT; ranked in the top 15% of their high school class;

The Ponder Minority Scholarship is designated specifically for minority students who are pursuing a Business or Accountancy degree.  The initial award is $5,000 and this scholarship can be used for eight semesters.  Students are selected based on class rank, ACT/SAT score, GPA, financial need, ethnicity, and geographic location.

Vasey Academy provides a $1,000 scholarship and the opportunity for minority students to explore the various areas of business and to participate in experiences that will enhance their success as students and future professionals.  Students are selected based on ACT/SAT scores, high school performance and activities.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT ST. EDWARD’S UNIVERSITY (Austin, TX)

The Holy Cross Scholar Award covers full tuition for four years.  Applicants must be ranked in the top 10% of their class and score at least a 1250 on the SAT or 28 on the ACT.  Holy Cross winners demonstrate an outstanding commitment to leadership, service and academics.  To obtain an application, visit www.gotostedwards.com/meritawards.xml.  All documents for the admission application and Holy Cross Scholar Award must be received by February 1st.

Trustees Scholar Award pays $9,000 per year for four years.  Applicants must be ranked in the top 20% of their class and score at least a 1200 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT.  No separate application is required.  Admission application must be postmarked by February 1st

 

BURGER KING® SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Burger King® Scholars awards are $1,000 each and may be used for educational expenses, such as tuition, fees, and books, during the first year of college or post-secondary vocational/technical schools.  Eligibility requirements include: cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher; work part-time an average of 15 hours per week or 40 weeks per year; actively involved in community service activities; demonstrate financial need.  Log on at www.bk.com/scholars to apply.  Deadline February 1, 2009.

HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Founded in 1975, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund’s vision is to strengthen the country by advancing college education among Hispanic Americans.  Student eligibility requirements are: be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident and have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA.  Awards range from $1,000 to $10,000.  Over 4,000 scholarships are awarded each year. MINORITY LAW AWARENESS DAY @ THE UNIVERSITY OF TULSA (Tulsa, OK)

In honor of National Minority Law Student Recruitment Month, The University of Tulsa College of Law, in conjunction with the Law School Admissions Council, will sponsor Minority Law Awareness Day on February 20, 2009.  In hosting this event, they hope to celebrate and encourage diversity in the field of law by providing useful information about the study and practice of law to groups in our community who have historically been under-represented in the legal field.  The schedule will include an observance of a mock trial, a law student panel discussion, a luncheon with minority leaders in our community, a meeting with Judge Carlos Chappelle,, a tour of the Tulsa County courthouse and tour of Conner & Winters law firm.  Obtain additional information from Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center.

 

 

HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND/HEWLETT PACKARD SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The HSF/HP Scholars Program is designed to provide scholarships and product packages to African American, Latino or American Indian students.  Applicants must pursue a degree in computer engineering, computer science or electrical engineering at partnering universities.  Award amounts are generally $12,000 over four years.  For eligibility information and to apply, visit www.hp.com/go/hpscholars.  Application deadline March 15, 2009.

 

ALPHA TAU LAMBDA CHAPTER OF ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC. SCHOLARSHIP

SAT

The first SAT and SAT Subject Tests for 2008-2009 are scheduled for next Saturday, October 4th.  The only option now available for this test is stand-by testing.  Cost $83.00. The next test is November 1st.  Cost $68.00. ACT

The first national ACT test for 2008-2009 is scheduled for October 25th.  Cost $51.00.  Late registration deadline this Friday, October 3rd.  The next test for which the basic $31.00 fee applies is December 13th. ACT PREPARATION COURSE @ THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA (Norman, OK)

For the past fourteen years, Wendy’s Restaurants have teamed up with the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee to create the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.  The award honors both male and female high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership.  Eligibility for application is limited exclusively to men and women entering their senior year of high school in the 2008-2009 academic year who have at least a “B” grade average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport. NATIONAL VETERINARY TECHNICIAN WEEK OPEN HOUSE @ MURRAY STATE COLLEGE

The Murray State College (Tishomingo, OK) Association of Veterinary Technicians (MSCAVT) joins the North American Veterinary Technician Association, in proclaiming the third week of October as National Veterinary Technician Week to recognize veterinary technicians nationwide for their contribution as members of the veterinary medical team.  Veterinary Technician’s primary responsibilities in a veterinary practice involve animal nursing, administering medications, assisting in surgery, radiology, induction and monitoring of anesthesia, hospital management, and laboratory duties.  As part of the national effort, MSCAVT is hosting an open house on October 15th, 9:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m. to introduce the public to the veterinary technician students and veterinary technology instructors. 2009 REISCHAUER SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE) invites all interested high school seniors to apply to the 2009 Reischauer Scholars Program (RSP).  The RSP annually selects 25 exceptional students from throughout the United States to engage in an intensive study of Japan (Students need not speak Japanese).  Selected students will participate in an Internet-mediated course on Japan from February to June 2009.  All students who successfully complete the course will earn 3 units of Stanford University Continuing Studies credit and a Certificate of Completion from SPCE, Stanford University.  Obtain additional information and an application from Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center or download one at www.reischauerscholars.org.  Deadline October 17th.

 

TULSA PARK AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT TRAINING AND SKILLS KNOWLEDGE PROGRAM – The Tulsa Park and Recreation Department offers this program to students who are interested in learning about a career in the park and recreation field.  Training will start in November and will be held after school on Tuesdays and some Saturdays.  Training will include Leadership, Oxley Nature Center, First Aid and CPR, Zoo, Recreation, Job Search, Interview Skills, Resumes, and Life Skills.  Qualifications for the program include: have and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, mandatory drug test, Social Security card, clear disciplinary record, photo student ID, and qualify for free or reduced lunch program.  Obtain an application from Mrs. Gaddis.  Application deadline October 20th.

Pittsburg State University is hosting three visit events for high school seniors during the fall semester:

Rumble in the Jungle Senior Saturday is scheduled for November 1st.  Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Academic Fair, campus tour and lunch.  Plus, the Gorillas will be in action on the gridiron and students and their guests are encouraged to attend (one complimentary ticket to each high school senior).

College of Arts and Sciences and College of Education Senior Day is November 8th.

This special day focuses on the academic programs at Pitt State.  Students and their parents will have the opportunity to interact with faculty and current students in their areas of interest and discuss the opportunities available.  A tour of campus and lunch will also be included.

Fine Arts Visit Day, November 10th, is a wonderful opportunity for high school students to visit Northwestern to find out about a career in music or theatre, what it is like to study the arts at the college level, and even audition for scholarship opportunities.  Fine Arts Visit Day is free and is open to any high school students and their parents who are interested in a degree in music or theatre at the college level. FIRST’S “FREEDOM IN ACADEMIA” ESSAY CONTEST

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) announces its first annual “Freedom in Academic” essay contest.  High school seniors are invited to write an in-depth essay explaining why free speech and First Amendment rights are crucial to higher education and how abuses of these rights harm education.  One first place winner will be awarded a college scholarship of $5,000.  The second place winner will receive a $2,500 college scholarship.  Obtain additional information from Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center.  Deadline November 20th.

 

FIRST FREEDOM STUDENT COMPETITION

The Council for America’s First Freedom announces the 16th annual First Freedom Student Competition, a national essay contest offering students an opportunity to compete for a $3,000, $1,500 and $750 award, as they examine the First Amendment and the history and relevance of religious freedom in America and the world today.  In addition to the monetary award, the first-place winner will receive an all-expense–paid trip to Newport, RI in mid-August 2009. THE GEORGE C. BROOKS SCHOLARSHIP @ THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI(Columbia, MO) – Named after former MU Financial Aid Director, George C. THE OFFICER RECRUITMENT DIVERSITY PROGRAM

SAT

The first SAT and SAT Subject Tests for 2008-2009 are scheduled for October 4th. The only option now available for this test is stand-by testing.  Cost $83.00. The next test for which the basic $45.00 fee applies is November 1st (Fee waivers are available; see Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center.). ACT

The first national ACT test for 2008-2009 is scheduled for October 25th.  Cost $51.00.  Late registration deadline October 3rd.  The next test for which the basic $31.00 fee applies is December 13th. SENIOR EVENTS @ PITTSBURG STATE UNIVERSITY (Pittsburg, KS)

Pittsburg State University is hosting two visit events for high school seniors during the fall semester:

Rumble in the Jungle Senior Saturday is scheduled for November 1st.  Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Academic Fair, campus tour and lunch.  Plus, the Gorillas will be in action on the gridiron and students and their guests are encouraged to attend (one complimentary ticket to each high school senior).

College of Arts and Sciences and College of Education Senior Day is November 8th.

These special days focus on the academic programs at Pitt State.  Students and their parents will have the opportunity to interact with faculty and current students in their areas of interest and discuss the opportunities available.  A tour of campus and lunch will also be included.

COCA-COLA SCHOLARS PROGRAM

THE RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM

Established in 1996, the Ron Brown Scholar Program awards scholarships to academically talented, highly motivated African American students who plan to pursue undergraduate degrees full time.  The program honors the late Ronald H. THE VOICE OF DEMOCRACY AUDIO-ESSAY CONTEST

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Ladies Auxiliary sponsors the Voice of Democracy audio-essay contest for high school students that annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships.  Besides competing for the top scholarship prize of $30,000, as well as other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $30,000, each VFW Department’s first-place winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.  The 2008-2009 theme is “Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans Benefits Today’s Youth By . . .”  Entry deadline November 1st.  Obtain additional information from Mrs. Gaddis in the Counseling Center.
