  1. Visiting the school by parents, guardians, and interested adults is encouraged.  Observations in classes by parents or guardians are to be scheduled by the grade Counselors and/or Team Leader, with at least 24-hour notice to the teacher’s class that will be observed.

  2. No visitor is permitted to see a student in the classroom unless the principal has granted permission.

  3. All unauthorized or unscheduled visits with students are prohibited.

  4. Visits by pupils from other schools or persons interested only in personal visits with students are prohibited.

  5. Under no circumstances will students be permitted to bring small children to school to visit.

Attendance Procedures

When a student is absent, it is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to notify the school as soon as possible.  The parent must notify the school before the absence occurs or on the morning the student is absent.  Call the Office before 8:40 a.m. at 746-8800 to notify the Attendance Office every day the student is absent.  If that is not possible, the student should bring a written note from the parent or guardian explaining his/her child’s absence.  The student’s absence will be unexcused until explained by a parent.  NOTE: State Law requires the school district to report (to the District Attorney) any student who has four (4) unexcused absences in any 4-week period.

Clearing Absences in Advance

If the parents find it necessary to take students out of school for a trip, they should make arrangements with the School Office at least one week in advance.  Vacations, out-of-town trips, etc., are formally considered unexcused, and schoolwork missed for these reasons will NOT be made up for credit unless prior approval has been obtained.  Any absence over the maximum ten days without written approval will be counted as an unexcused absence in accordance with the school regulations.  Students may NOT make arrangements with individual teachers when they are to be absent for trips or vacations.  All such absences must be arranged through the Main Office and be approved by the Principal.

Leaving During the School Day

All requests to leave the building while school is in session, including the lunch period, must be cleared through the school office.  Leaving school without permission is classified as truancy.
Nimitz is a closed campus, and students may not leave the school grounds during the school day.  Students who need to leave for medical appointments must bring a note from home to the attendance clerk in the main office before school.  The note must state the reason for early dismissal, the time, and the date.  Students must be signed out by a parent/guardian in the school office.  Students will only be released to authorized persons.

Early Release

When making appointments outside the school, please be mindful that all classes are important and it is imperative that students be present as much as possible to improve their academic progress.

Please note that after 3:10 p.m., students will not be released early nor will messages be delivered to students except in the case of a true emergency.

Tardy Policy

All students are to be in their HomeBase classroom, seated, quiet, and ready for record activities at 8:20 a.m.  A student who is tardy to school, but arrives before 8:40, will report to their HomeBase teacher.  After 8:40 students who are tardy will report to the office for a tardy slip.  The teacher will keep a record of tardies for the HomeBase and all other classes.  After a student accumulates THREE tardies, the teacher will issue a summons to the student for lunch detention. If a student is more than 5 minutes late, without a pass, they should not be admitted to class.

Withdrawal and transfer policy

The procedure for withdrawing or transferring is as follows:

  1. Secure authorization withdrawal or transfer note from parent or guardian.
  2. Obtain appropriate forms from the Main Office.
  3. Have the forms filled out by the teachers, return all schoolbooks and property, and make sure all fees are paid.
  4. Take completed forms to the Main Office for final clearance.

Bicycle riders may park their bikes in the racks.  Students must   “walk” their bikes on campus.  Be sure to lock your bike and helmet.  Students and parents must assume responsibility for lost or stolen bicycles.  Students who do not ride bikes should not be in the bicycle area at any time.  Skateboards and roller blades are not permitted on school grounds or in the bus.

Bus regulations

Students who come to school on the bus should return home on the same bus.  Riding the school bus is a privilege.  Improper conduct on the buses will result in that privilege being denied.  Only regularly scheduled bus students are to ride the school buses.  Bus students are to go immediately to the bus as soon as they are dismissed from school in the afternoon.  Buses leave promptly.

Medications

Medications to be taken at school must be in the original container.  It should be brought to school by a parent or guardian, and given to the school nurse.  Only a one-week supply of medication should be brought each time.  Even though there are guidelines, there is flexibility to allow the nurse and health services to consider each individual student’s need.  You are encouraged to call your school nurse (746-8810) to discuss how the policy and guidelines affect your student.

First aid

School personnel will administer no medications or medical treatment. It is imperative that the school has a current telephone number on file where the parents or a responsible individual may be reached in the event of an emergency.
