INTERMEDIATE BAND (full year – 2 semesters) For students with little or no experience with a band or concert instrument. It will be necessary for the student to rent or buy a band instrument for the year. Performances for parents and family are held throughout the year. This class will require time at home for practicing the instrument. It is also for those students, who may have begun band as sixth graders, but need more instruction to feel fully confident about their musical skills. ADVANCED BAND (full year – 2 semesters) For 8th grade students and those 7th graders who have excellent skills. Enrollment in this class as a 7th grader will require written permission from Mr. Janke.VOCAL MUSIC (half year – 1 semester) This class is for students who like to sing and enjoy music. Performance skills and the basics of vocal music will be taught. Students will have opportunities to participate in school and contest performances. ART (half year – 1 semester) Art activities and production will include drawing and design as it relates to themes, clay building, print making, computer-generated art, paper sculpture, and mural painting. SPANISH I (half year – 1 semester) This elective presents an introductory look at learning a foreign language. The method used is based in part on TPR, or Total Physical Response as developed by Dr. James Asher. Simply put, this method involves learning a foreign language through action. Students are given an introduction to Hispanic multiculturalism and taught real-world conversation skills.SPANISH II (half year – 1 semester) This class is for students who have taken Spanish I; it is a continuation of the skills and information taught in Spanish I.FRENCH I (half year – 1 semester) This elective is also an introductory look at learning foreign language. This course teaches students to begin speaking conversational French with confidence. Some of the things that students will learn are how to greet people and make introductions, count, tell time, describe the weather, order food in restaurants, and interview others. This course also invites students to learn about the French culture. FRENCH II (half year – 1 semester) This class is for students who have taken French I. It is a continuation of the skills and information taught in French I.PHYSICAL EDUCATION (half year – 1 semester) Physical Education class requires active participation. Each day students are expected to dress in the PE uniform (black or navy shorts and white T-shirt) and do their Personal Best. Depending on the semester of enrollment, activities will include but not be limited to the following: archery, basketball, bowling, cross country/road races, dance, flag football, soccer, swimming, tennis, first aid, fitness testing, and volleyball.FOUNDATIONS FOR ALGEBRA, YR. 1 (full year –2 semesters) This 7th grade math course is the first sequence in the College Preparatory Math series. Students in this course will cover such topics as integers and data interpretation, order of operations, area, geometry, probability and statistics.PRE-ALGEBRA (full year – 2 semesters) This 7th grade class is the course taken by students who anticipate taking algebra as an eighth grader. Topics covered include, but are not limited to: integer operations, algebraic sentences, solving equations and inequalities, ratios and proportions and graphing equations. Teacher approval and placement test determine enrollment.FRENCH (IMMERSION) (full year – 2 semesters) This course is a continuation of the sixth grade class with a greater emphasis on sentence structures, composition, using already acquired grammar and language skills. A more in-depth exploration and research of French world cultures and literature.SPANISH (IMMERSION) (full year – 2 semesters) This course is a continuation of the sixth grade class with a greater emphasis on sentence structures, composition, using already acquired grammar and language skills.
