8th Grade Supply List

2008-2009

*Please do not label any of your supplies until they are turned in*

The following items are to be kept by the students for use in their core classes:

1- ½ inch binder with inside cover pockets (No trapper keepers!)

1-package tab dividers with pockets

10- Pencils

10- Blue or Black Ink Pens

2-packages lined, loose leaf paper (college or wide rule)

1 - Highlighter

1 – Thoreau Agenda book (to be bought through school bookstore)

1 – Combination Master Lock (may be bought through school bookstore)

1-Flash drive

The following items will be turned in to the student’s 1st core block teacher:

2- Composition Notebooks (only for Newsom)

10- Pencils

1- package Colored pencils

1- package Markers

1-Scotch tape

1-bottle rubber cement/glue sticks

1- full-size Scissors

1- 12 inch ruler

2 - packages lined, loose-leaf paper (college or wide rule)

1-package tab dividers with pockets

1-pad quadrille (4 squares per inch) graph paper

2 - Reams copy paper

2- Boxes tissue

1 -Packages index cards (either 3 x 5 or 4 x 6)

1 pair safety goggles

Algebra Students

It is strongly suggested that you have a calculator for Algebra. It does not have to be scientific.

 

Language Arts/Social Studies

Students may be required to purchase novels throughout the school year.

*Many of these supplies will need to be replaced throughout the year as necessary*

 

 

 

 

8th Grade Electives

ADVANCED BAND

For 8th grade band students and those 7th graders who have excellent skills.

VOCAL MUSIC

This class is for students who like to sing and enjoy music. Performance skills and the basics of vocal music will be taught. Students will have opportunities to participate in school and contest performances.

ART (half year – 1 semester)

Art activities and production will include drawing and design as it relates to themes, clay building, print making, computer-generated art, paper sculpture, and mural painting.

SPANISH I (half year – 1 semester)

This elective presents an introductory look at learning a foreign language. The method used is based in part on TPR, or Total Physical Response as developed by Dr. James Asher. Simply put, this method involves learning a foreign language through action. Students are given an introduction to Hispanic multiculturalism and taught real world conversation skills.

SPANISH II (half year – 1 semester)

This class is for those students who have already taken Spanish I. It will include a continuation of the skills taught in Spanish I.

FRENCH I (half year – 1 semester)

This elective provides an introductory look at another foreign language. This course teaches students to begin speaking conversational French with confidence. Some of the things that students will learn are how to greet people and make introductions, count, tell time, describe the weather, order food in restaurants, and interview others. This course also invites students to learn about French culture.

FRENCH II (half year – 1 semester)

This class is for students who have taken French I. It is a continuation of the skills and information taught in French I.


PHYSICAL EDUCATION (half year – 1 semester)

Physical Education class requires active participation. Each day students are expected to dress in the PE uniform (black or navy shorts and white T-shirt) and do their Personal Best. Depending on the semester of enrollment, activities will include but not be limited to the following: archery, basketball, bowling, cross country/road races, dance, flag football, soccer, swimming, tennis, first aid, fitness testing, and volleyball.

 

COLLEGE PREPARATORY ALGEBRA (full year – 2 semesters)

This course will cover all content in the Oklahoma PASS objectives for Algebra. In addition, it contains a balance among computational and procedural skills, conceptual understanding and problem solving. Students who pass this course will receive high school credit for algebra. Teacher recommendation and test placement will determine enrollment.

PRE-ALGEBRA – YR. 2 (full year – 2 semesters)

This 8th grade math course is the second sequence in the College Preparatory math series. Course topics include data interpretation, integer operations and graphing equations, algebraic sentences, solving equation, Pythagorean Theorem, exponents, and slopes. This course is designed to prepare students for Algebra I in the ninth grade.

FRENCH (IMMERSION) (full year – 2 semesters)

This course is a continuation of 6th and 7th grade immersion classes with a greater emphasis on sentence structures, composition, using already acquired grammar and language skills. A more in-depth exploration and research of French world cultures and literature will be studied.

SPANISH (IMMERSION) (full year – 2 semesters)

This course is a continuation of 6th and 7th grade immersion classes with a greater emphasis on sentence structures, composition, using already acquired grammar and language skills. A more in-depth exploration and research of Hispanic world cultures and literature will be studied.
