Uniform Policy

The student uniform policy has been adopted with the intent and expectation that it will:

bullet

promote a more effective climate for learning and student achievement by eliminating clothing
distractions

bullet

increase campus safety and security by eliminating "gang clothing"

bullet

permit school administrators and security officers to immediately identify persons trespassing
on the school campus

bullet

improve students’ sense of school spirit and pride

bullet

place students of varying socio-economic levels on an even footing in regard to their appearance

bullet

ensure that students dress appropriately

bullet

minimize costs to parents

bullet

promote attendance

bullet

enhance the image of Thoreau in the community

The student uniform policy is not intended to infringe on students’ First Amendment rights or to suppress
student expression. Students have numerous alternative channels for expressing their views, such as:

bullet

class participation

bullet

conversations with teachers and administrators

bullet

participation in student organizations

bullet

circulation of petitions

Students may express their personal religious views through other means. In order to implement the student uniform policy in a sensitive, responsible and effective manner,  there will be a two-week phase-in period for compliance after school starts each year.  Students who fail to comply will be advised of the requirements and a parent will be contacted.  The School will take a series of progressive steps, including parental involvement, to assure compliance by all students with the student uniform
policy.  Appropriate arrangements will be made to supply uniforms for students whose parents are unable to afford the uniform cost.
