FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL September 2, 2003

At 8:45 a.m. – 6th, 7th and 8th grades report to Auditorium

Tribes teachers will report to the auditorium and call names of pupils on their class list. Tribes teachers will take all students and escort them to their Tribes area. Tribes teachers will sign all schedule cards and make a class list. (Use "Temporary Class Roll" form.) Take roll from schedule cards and return cards to students.

Instruct students to make a copy of their schedule card.

All students who have not enrolled will report to the Library. Tribes will last until 9:05 a.m. All unclaimed schedule cards should be sent to the attendance clerk by 9:25. Students will then report to first hour and follow their schedules for the remainder of the day.

The seventh hour teacher will take roll from the schedule cards and return the schedule cards to the students. Have the students place their schedule cards inside the plastic pocket in the back of their agenda books. Distribute any handouts that may need distribution at 3:20 today. Five (5) minutes allowed for passing between classes.

A.  Enrollment

Thoreau Academy students who are properly enrolled will carry schedule cards. These schedule cards will indicate the subject and periods to which students have been assigned.

Be guided by the following procedures:

Accept into your class only those students who bring a completed schedule card.

Check each card carefully to see that the student belongs in your class and sign the card in the space provided.

Do not accept:

bullet

Students who do not have schedule cards should be sent to the counselor.

6th – Ms. Martin

7th (A-H) Ms. Martin

7th (I-Z) Ms. Moore

8th – Ms. Moore

bulletStudents whose cards indicate they are not scheduled in your class for that particular period should be directed to the appropriate classroom.

Your class roll should be made from the names on
the cards that have been signed. Use the form "Temporary Class Roll". Forms for reporting the size of each class will be in record room teachers’ boxes.

After completing the class roll, return the signed
schedule cards to the students. Instruct students that if they lose their schedule cards, they should report to the counselor immediately.

Tribes teachers, please instruct your students to make sure the bottom portion of the schedule card is accurate and complete.

Attendance

By 9:05 today, take the attendance and send it to the attendance clerk in the main office. All unclaimed schedule cards should be sent to the attendance clerk by 9:30 a.m. Once a student has reported to your class, you must count them either present or absent each day thereafter.

Tribes:

Tribes teachers should have an absentee card for each student enrolled in class. Call roll using the absentee cards. Pull the absentee card of each student who is absent and send to Donna Shook NO LATER than 9:10, but not before 9:05 by a student. If there are no absences, send the "No Absences" card to Donna Shook in the main office. Taking attendance is required from each Tribes teacher each day. Teachers (NEVER STUDENTS) must call roll.

B. Attendance Bulletin

An attendance bulletin is printed each day and issued to teachers during second hour. Please consult this bulletin when taking roll for the remainder of the day. This bulletin lists all students reported absent from Tribes AND students who have entered school or withdrawn from school the day before. Check the following four points carefully.

    1.  Do not report absent during the remainder of the day those
students listed as absent on the attendance bulletin.

    2.  Report as absent those students NOT listed on the attendance
bulletin and who do not appear in class. (NOTE: This is how we
        catch many truants.)

    3. The attendance clerk will check out all absences.

    4.  Any student listed on the attendance bulletin who reports to class
later in the day MUST present an official admit from the attendance
desk for the teacher’s signature or be sent immediately to the
attendance desk to secure an "Admit".

C.  Second Hour through Seventh Hour

Call roll using the class list. Students who are absent should be marked as such on the class list. Check the attendance bulletin to see if the absent student is listed. If the student is not listed on the attendance bulletin, he or she is considered to be truant. Fill out an Odd Hour Absentee Form for each hour. (See folder pocket) Send these attendance slips to the attendance clerk in the main office each hour of the day. No student should be allowed to sit in your class if their name appears on the attendance bulletin.

D.  Tardy
