Tribes Contest

Start date: March 24, 2008 (Monday)

End date: April 11, 2008 (Friday)

Directions:

Tribes will compete by accumulating the most items from the supplies list attached. The supplies accumulated will be sent to (6) troops currently serving in Iraq. The Leadership Corps will provide disbursement, collection, and mailing of the items you put in your boxes. Only bring items from the list, and please try to find small travel sizes. Thank You.

Reward:

Please keep the men and women who serve this country in our thoughts regardless of political ideologies. These people sacrifice a great deal. We know you would donate supplies for this cause without special incentive, but a little reward couldn’t hurt.

1st place wins a pizza party.

2nd place wins an ice cream party.

3rd place wins a do-nut party.

Pick Up:

Leadership Cadets will collect the boxes of supplies on April 11, 2008. Boxes are to be labeled with the tribe teacher’s name. The boxes will also need to be taped closed before the pick up date. Mr. Davison will tally the totals and the winner will be announced on April 14, 2008.

Thank You for your participation in this contest in advance. The Leadership Corps guarantees all items will be sent to these soldiers. Thank you for your cooperation.

Thoreau Joins Channel 2 Weather Network

The Foundation for Tulsa Schools awarded Joey Newsom, 8th Grade Math and Science Teacher, a grant for over $12,000 to purchase the WeatherBug Weather Station equipment and software.  The station was installed during the summer and is now fully functional.  The current weather conditions at Thoreau can be viewed from any computer that is hooked to the internet.  Live pictures can also be seen from the camera.  Dan Threlkeld, Channel 2 Meteorologist, has displayed the current weather readings from Thoreau and shown timed lapsed video from the camera.  Mr. Padalino, Thoreau Principal, commented, "It is awesome to have this technology in our building.  I am excited about how the teachers are going to use it in their classroom to enhance the curriculum and the learning of their students."  Mr. Newsom explained, "The most exciting parts about the WeatherBug program are the software and curriculum components.  For example, students can complete a math lesson teaching the mean, median and mode using the WeatherBug Achieve Software.  The data that the software uses will come directly from the Thoreau weather station.  Plus, a student can compare our readings to any of 8,000 other weather stations."  Thoreau math and science teachers are currently working on curriculum strategies for their classroom. In addition, they are developing programs in Extended Day, Technology Education, and Micro-Society to use the curriculum.  Newsom added, "Thanks to the Foundation for Tulsa Schools, we have this exciting and powerfully educational tool at Thoreau."

WeatherBug has a desktop weather station for you home computer.  It will tell you the current Thoreau readings, provide a forecast, show radar images and display a current live picture from the Thoreau camera.  Click on the WeatherBug logo below to get information about the download process.
