The extended day program is designed to meet the social and emotional needs and interests of students at the end of the curricular day. It is voluntary and students participate in activities of their choice, including physical and intellectual pursuits. There are approximately seventeen different activities offered from 3:45 pm until 4:20 pm, at which time the students are bussed home. Activities range from language classes in Latin, Spanish, Russian, French, and Italian to basketball, swimming, running, Tae Kwan Do, cooking, yearbook, needlework, painting, reading, modeling, dancing, computer games, and curricular-based study halls. For the child who needs extra help with projects and assignments, teachers and para teachers are available to assist with special needs. Community based sponsors and businesses provide their services for some classes that may be fee-based; however, the majority of activities are free and available to every student at Thoreau. Approximately 90% of the student body participates in one or more extended day activities weekly. The classes change every nine weeks, offering a variety of activities for students.
