Booker T. Washington High School
Model United Nations Club
Starting a club at your school
1) Find a teacher sponsor. Scan your school for responsible, educated in international relations (social studies teachers are great), and willing teachers whose title is either Ms., Mrs., Mr. or Dr. (NOT coach).
2) Consult with your sponsor on leadership positions, scheduling, and funding opportunities. Look at our Model United Nations Charter for help on assigning leadership positions. Try to find at least one day a week to meet with your club. Find out if you need to be registered with your school, and if you need to get permission from an executive. Brainstorm with your sponsor about fundraising opportunities. Look towards local corporations and fundraisers.
3) Herd your student minions into your meetings (Cattle prods can be helpful). Pre-plan your meetings so you have things to talk about. Bring newspaper articles to discuss. Research topics and country backgrounds in your school's library. Discuss conference possibilities with your fellow delegates to get their input.
