Dear Whitney Parents,

We have had a busy summer, full of routine maintenance and preparation for construction of the new library addition.  However, summer is nearly over and we are gearing up for another great school year.  We are certainly looking forward to a productive academic year and working with your student.  Please be reminded that all TPS Middle School students wear school uniforms.  Most of our patrons are familiar with our uniform policy because we are now in our third consecutive year with school uniforms.  All students will need to be in proper uniform dress on the first day.  Students not in uniform will not be allowed to attend classes.  Enclosed is uniform policy information.  Feel free to come by the school to view the uniform examples in our display case.

We have the same school hours for the middle schools this year.  The tardy bell will ring at 8:20 a.m. and the dismissal bell will sound at 3:10 p.m.  Please make arrangements to have your student at school by 8:15 a.m.

Getting started on that first day (Monday, August 11) should be an easy process for your student.  7th grade students will need to report to the front foyer and 8th grade students to the cafeteria.  All 7th and 8th graders will need to find their names posted on one of the Advisory class lists in their respective areas.  The 7th and 8th graders will need to report to their advisory class by 8:20 a.m.  Their Advisor will provide them with their class schedule and further instructions.

7th and 8th grade students that are pre-enrolled do not need to report to school before August 11.  Schedules are not available before the first day of classes.  We have traditionally had smooth openings, and I am sure that this year will not be an exception.

However, we ARE providing a schedule card pick-up for 6th grade only.  6th grade students and/or parents can pick up their schedule on Wednesday, August 6, from 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Students and parents are encouraged to pick up their schedule and walk from room to room to become familiar with our building.

On August 11, the first day of school, 6th grade students will need to report to the auditorium as they arrive that morning.  The 6th graders will confirm their advisory teacher by checking the Advisory lists.  Sixth graders will also need to report to their advisory teacher by 8:20 a.m.

Every morning, all students must enter the building through the front doors.  Formal supervision begins at 7:50 a.m. in our cafeteria. The breakfast program also begins serving at 7:50 a.m.  Please do not have your student arrive at school prior to 7:50 a.m.  The recommended arrival time for non-breakfast students is 8:10 a.m.  Students can move into the hallways at 8:12 a.m.  Students need to be in their Advisory classroom seat by 8:20 a.m. when the final tardy bell sounds.

Back-to-School Night will be coming soon on Thursday, September 4, at 6:30 p.m.  Please attend so we can inform you about our instructional programs.  We certainly want all of our patrons to meet the people that will be working with your students this year.

I’m excited to report that Whitney again had impressive gains with our state test scores according to our preliminary testing information from the ESC.  This year’s scores appear to be even higher than last year’s, so the improvement continues to move forward.  We have a great school at Whitney and are continually working hard to improve academic achievement.  Go Bears!

With best regards,

Derrick Schmidt
