How I Solve Problems
Academic- If a child is having difficulty with a particular subject, I will:
First determine if the problem is language or the concept. They can tell me in English and I will rephrase it for them in Spanish. I will expect them to use the new vocabulary.
Reteach the concept in a different manner, ask a child to explain to your child, or have my para reteach the concept. Sometimes, another person (even a child can explain things better that I can). I do expect reteachings to be done in Spanish. Remember it is not a language problem.
Social- If your child has trouble following the life skills, I will:
First, consult with the child. I see you doing ____. It is not acceptable, because_____.
If you continue, part of your recess is mine. You are warned.
Second, partial recess is lost and child will verbalize:
My poor choice of behavior was______.
I could do _____ instead next time.
Third, I will conference with your child will write down: My poor choice of behavior was______.
I could do _____ instead next time.
This little contract must be signed by the parent.
Fourth, I will place a call to the parent and ask for parental support. The three of us will have a conference and discuss behavior contracts.
Fifth, I will send your child to the office.
FYI: I allow 6 weeks for my procedures to become ingrained, so nobody will get past level 1 for 4 more weeks.
