DonorsChoose surprised Burroughs Elementary with a $100,000 donation for teachers to use for their classrooms!
The surprise was announced at a school-wide assembly honoring the school’s dedicated educators during Black History Month. The announcement, attended by Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson, the Foundation for Tulsa Schools, and DonorsChoose, was met with excitement from students and teachers alike.
“The remarkable educators at Burroughs Elementary School are shaping the next chapter in Black history,” said Alix Guerrier, CEO of DonorsChoose. “We’re thrilled to provide crucial resources to these teachers as they build community, make change, and cultivate the talents and passions of their students. This Black History Month, we not only honor the past but put our hopes in a more equitable future.”
Black teachers have been instrumental in shaping Black history and American history, and this is particularly true in Tulsa Public Schools and at Burroughs Elementary. Burroughs Elementary was the first school in Tulsa to fully integrate, and the school educates a majority Black population.
“Teachers are magical, and this is a joyful opportunity to honor and celebrate our passionate educators on Team Tulsa.” said Dr. Johnson. “Our team dedicates every day to our students and to our future. This generous gift from DonorsChoose will make a difference for the young people here in these classrooms today while also recognizing the special place that Burroughs Elementary occupies in Tulsa’s history and in Black history.”
This $100,000 donation towards Burroughs will provide its teachers with an opportunity to access additional and innovative supplies that will enrich their students’ education. Some educators at Burroughs Elementary have previously used DonorsChoose to request funding to put on a science fair, coats and jackets to keep kids warm, and brain teasing puzzles to improve students’ problem solving skills.
