Dear Tulsa families,

For many years, Tulsa Public Schools has used the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessment to help measure student growth and guide teacher instruction. With your support, our teachers and schools have used MAP to help students grow. Today, after careful consideration, I want to let you know that the district will discontinue the use of the MAP assessment beginning with the 2026-27 school year. Instead, an existing set of assessment tools will be used to provide insight into your student’s learning several times a year. 

As we evaluate students’ performance levels over the last decade using MAP, we believe we can better utilize that testing time to teach and re-teach standards with the help of an assessment tool that best serves students and better supports instructional planning. That means starting this fall, we will implement a revised plan designed to provide better feedback for teachers, reduce testing time, strengthen alignment to the Oklahoma Academic Standards, and better support student learning through:

• Reduced testing burden so students spend more time engaged in meaningful instruction.
• Improved opportunities for family support with information that is easier to communicate and act upon.
• More actionable data that helps teachers make timely instructional and intervention decisions.

As part of this transition, the district will use an existing suite of assessment tools – or “screeners” – at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. We are confident these tools will support ongoing progress monitoring and instructional planning. Additionally, the strong connection to state testing standards means teachers and schools can focus on grade-level mastery while supporting continued student growth.

We will provide an update soon regarding magnet school assessment requirements to ensure those families participating in the magnet enrollment process have clear and consistent information throughout the transition. If you have any questions, please reach out directly to your school principal.
