Central High School senior Cindie Yizel Villela Bojorquez and Booker T. Washington senior Leonel Olmos Jr. won the Live the Tradition! scholarships!
Tulsa Public Schools and Morelos Supermercados held a contest for two $1,000 scholarships. Students who entered had to write an essay or make a video explaining what being Hispanic means to them. The winners were announced at the Hispanic Heritage Festival.
Leonel wrote about his family and his experience growing up in the United States.
"All of the dreams and expectations mis padres had for their new generation was left to me," he wrote.
Cindie compared her life to fairy tales, writing that life presents things that are difficult to overcome but not impossible.
"En mi caso no fue necesariamente el de luchar contra dragones, si no el hecho de tener que enfrentar con lo que iba ser mi nueva realidad, antes de entrar a Central High School."
Congratulations to Cindie and Leonel!
