McLain hosts prom dress shopping event for students

McLain juniors and seniors have started prom dress shopping inside their school building. About 300 donated dresses, as well as shoes, purses, and jewelry, adorn room 131. Students are invited to come out every Wednesday from now until May 19 to select their full prom outfit -- for free!

"We're hoping that any girl that doesn't have a dress yet can come," said Alden Weeks, McLain ESS math teacher. "We have about 100 junior and senior girls so hopefully we get all of them in a good dress."

Alden and other McLain staff members help the girls search the rack for dresses to try on, and they can try on as many as they need to find the perfect dress.

"It's about bringing girls in, mentoring them, making sure they feel beautiful and confident and love themselves and love their bodies. It's about way more than dresses for us," said Alden.

On May 19, the girls will gather the gym to get their hair and makeup done and photos taken by local professionals who have donated their time.

"We're hoping that the folks that are coming will teach them how to do their hair and makeup how they want to do it for prom," said Alden.

Prom will be held on May 22 at Titan Arena to allow for distancing and masks will be required. There are plenty of beautiful dresses left to choose from -- students are encouraged to sign up for a time to come pick one out before the May 19 event.
