February break from Monday, Feb. 21-Friday, Feb. 25

There will be no classes next week (Monday, Feb. 21 - Friday. Feb. 25), and classes will resume on Monday, Feb. 28. As you may know, each year Tulsa Public Schools convenes a committee of educators and parents to work with our team on the school calendar for the following year. The calendar is designed and then presented to the Tulsa Board of Education for approval.

Our 2021-2022 calendar, like those for each of the two prior years, was designed to exceed state requirements while also supporting learning and minimizing student absences by avoiding short weeks. We created intersession weeks with the goal of providing optional enrichment activities. The disruption of the omicron surge and our continued staffing constraints have not allowed us to provide those enrichment opportunities as planned. We look forward to coming years during which COVID-related disruptions are few and far between.

We are now in the process of working with our calendar committee to develop the 2022-2023 school calendar. We do this with a calendar committee that includes a variety of stakeholders. The current draft of that calendar continues to avoid short weeks. However, while the calendar will include breaks, we are not planning for intersession weeks next year.

COVID-19 data and safety information

Based on the latest information from our local health professionals, Tulsa County COVID-19 rates and the number of positive cases at our schools are showing a pattern of consistent decline across the last three weeks while vaccination rates continue to increase. As of this morning, more than 80% of Tulsans have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. We are grateful that so many Tulsans are doing their part to keep our community safe, and that we are seeing promising results!

Barring any unforeseen changes in community spread across the next week, we anticipate changing our safety guidance to strongly recommending – rather than expecting – masking for all adults and children in our schools and district office buildings. If we make that change, it would take effect when classes resume on Monday, Feb. 28.

We will continue to monitor local COVID-19 data closely over the coming days and share an update to our team and families by Friday, Feb. 25. In the interim, if you have not yet received your COVID-19 vaccination, we encourage you to visit vaccinate.oklahoma.gov to schedule your appointment. The COVID-19 vaccine is safe, effective, and available free of charge to any individuals ages five and older - click here to learn more.
