Keeping our school buildings open and students in class depends upon the awareness of and immediate action on any COVID-19 concerns in our buildings. Our nurses, nurse assistants, and other trained staff are providing rapid testing weekly at school and district sites to help quickly identify COVID exposures and reduce transmission. The testing of a random number of individuals will allow us to determine prevalence and use the data as an early warning indicator to monitor conditions. For specific situations, where available, rapid testing will be administered for suspected cases where symptoms are present. Individuals can opt in to take part in testing. Find a schedule of when rapid testing is available at your site below.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why is rapid Covid-19 testing recommended?
-
Participating in the rapid testing for Covid-19 program at Tulsa Public Schools will allow our district and your school to identify potential exposures early and take quick actions to keep everyone safe. It will also allow individual Team Tulsa members to know if they need to take action based on the results from the rapid test.
-
- What test will be used? Is it painful?
- We will be using a rapid antigen test called the Abbott BinaxNOW test. It is a swab (similar to the size of a Q-tip) that is inserted into the nose (less than 1 inch) for five to ten seconds. We understand that some individuals may be nervous about testing, but the test is not painful. The test should take no more than two minutes from start to finish to administer.

- Who will be testing me?
- The Abbott BinaxNOW test is a self administered nasal swab. Nurses, health assistants, and other trained team members will observe, provide guidance, and assist if needed as individuals collect their own sample. Once the sample is collected, a trained staff member will gather the test for processing.

- How will the testing work?
- The main focus of the rapid testing program at schools will be screening. The objective of screening is to reduce transmission by isolating potentially infected individuals. The testing of a random number of individuals (sample) will allow us to determine prevalence and use the data as an early warning indicator to monitor conditions that are more localized and specific to the school context. For some specific situations, where available, rapid testing will be administered for suspected cases where symptoms are present. Individuals can opt in to take part in testing.
