Senior Spotlight: Nicoe Knighten at Central High School

Nicoe Knighten is a member of the Central High School class of 2023! She’s been playing basketball since middle school, and her skills on the court will carry her into college. She recently signed to play basketball at McPherson College in Kansas!

“I want to major in exercise science and eventually become a physical therapist. When I was younger I was in physical therapy for my knee, and I thought it seemed interesting.”

Nicoe says her coach has played a big role in the development of her basketball skills: “Coach Jimmie is very encouraging – he makes sure I’m performing well. He isn’t afraid to tell me when he knows I can do better. If I’m taken off a play, he makes sure I’m working to improve.”

Her favorite teacher is Ms. Kenya Dennis who teaches science: “She is encouraging and gives you her honest opinion. When you’re having a bad day, she always makes sure you’re okay, and reminds you that everything will be okay and that everyone has bad days and good days. Teachers here at Central really helped me get out of my shell and not be as shy. I’ve opened up because everyone is so friendly and helpful.

“One of my favorite memories is the teachers vs. students basketball game. It was something we did for senior night. The teachers really can’t play basketball!

“Someone who has really helped me is my counselor Mr. Yang. He makes sure I’m on top of all of my senior responsibilities. He helps me with my college transcripts and makes sure I have all of my college stuff ready to go!”

Her advice for upcoming seniors is to not procrastinate in preparing for college: “Be sure to have your college stuff ready to go! Senior year goes by quickly and if you aren’t prepared, you’ll have to rush around to get it all done.”

The Central High School graduation will take place Thursday, May 18 at 5:30 p.m. at Expo Pavilion, 4145 East 21st St.
