students at Ebony Bowl
The Robert I. Mayes Sr. Ebony Awareness Bowl is an annual academic competition that challenges middle school students to learn Black history facts that are not typically covered in mainstream curricula. The bowl is run by the Tulsa Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. It is a wonderful community event that blends academic competition with cultural education and pride.

This year, Tulsa Public Schools proudly sent teams from Central Middle School, Edison Preparatory Middle, and Hale Middle School. The energy these young scholars brought to the competition was nothing short of electric! Students didn't just show up they showed out. More than a trophy and the prize money, students walked away with something far greater, a deeper connection to their history and a fierce pride in the stories that mainstream textbooks too often leave out. The Ebony Awareness Bowl continues to prove that when young people are given the tools to know where they come from, there is absolutely no limit to where they can go.
