Students participate in Indian Education Summer Camp

More than 50 students are taking part in the Indian Education summer camp at Lanier Elementary this week! The five day camp gives students in the Indian Education program the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun activities with community partners.

Cultural specialist Chris Hill is teaching students about dwellings from four tribal regions. After students learn about these dwellings, like teepees and long houses, they get to build a model of one.

Students are also learning archery from Brian Jackson and playing Native games like stickball with representatives from the Indian Health Care Resource Center.

Chef Nico is teaching students Native recipes. On the first day, students made a strawberry and cucumber salad and  vinaigrette dressing.

Representatives from Gilcrease are working on art projects with students. They made colorful corn mosaics and neon blacklight art.

Later in the week, members of the Muscogee Creek Nation will bring a trunk full of cultural items for student to study, and their new Mvskoke royalty Miss and Junior Miss will be stopping by to visit with students.

On Friday, 3rd through 5th grade students will take a field trip to the Zarrow Library for a musical presentation before going to the Philbrook Museum for a tour and lunch.

The Indian Education Summer Camp for middle and high school students will be next week. Students will be going on a different cultural field trip each day -- from the Euchee Butterfly Farm on Monday to the Chickasaw Cultural Center on Friday and much more in-between.
