This evening, Tulsa Public Schools announced the district’s 2022 Teacher of the Year and 2022 Support Employee of the Year. The district named Carver Middle School teacher Traci Manuel as the 2022 Tulsa Public Schools Teacher of the Year and Carver Middle School library teacher assistant Andrew Horowitz as the 2022 Support Employee of the Year.

“Traci and Andrew represent the thousands of extraordinary educators and professionals who serve Tulsa children and families every day,” said Superintendent Deborah Gist. “As our Teacher and Support Employee of the Year, Traci and Andrew demonstrate exemplary skills in the classroom and as leaders and models for their colleagues.”

“This is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate all of our dedicated educators, and we are so proud of Traci and all of the finalists,” said TCTA President Shawna Mott-Wright. “We have the most amazing teachers who are making such a difference in the lives of our children no matter what obstacles they may face.”

“Andrew constantly demonstrates a relentless focus on ensuring that every child and family has the tools and supports that they need to be successful,” said American Federation of Teachers President Nancy Leonard. “I am incredibly proud of him and all of our finalists. I know they will continue to go above and beyond to serve the Tulsa Public Schools family.” 

The Teacher of the Year and Support Employee of the Year awards are the culmination of a process beginning in the fall when a teacher and support employee are selected from each school and some district sites. Site-level winners are reviewed by committees that include representatives from the TCTA and AFT, school leaders, district staff, 2021 Teacher of the Year Donna Ross, and 2021 Support Employee of the Year winner Heather Mackey. In March, these committees identified five finalists from each group: 

Teacher of the Year finalists:

• Dorothy Blakey, first-grade teacher at Wayman Tisdale Fine Arts Academy;
• Shannon Cox-MacPherson, first-grade teacher at Celia Clinton Elementary School;
• Claire Lewis, algebra and AP statistics teacher at McLain High School;
• Traci Manuel, English language arts teacher at Carver Middle School; and
• Janet McCarty Smith, sixth-grade teacher at McKinley Elementary School.

Support Employee of the Year finalists:

• Miranda Beachy, teacher’s assistant at Robertson Elementary School;
• Andrew Horowitz, library teacher assistant at Carver Middle School;
• Ilse Mendoza, zone manager on the Plant Operations team;
• Helen Lee, manager of strategic operations for safety, security, and prevention on the Operations team; and
• Jeff Cox, building grounds site supervisor at Will Rogers College High School.

The 2022 Teacher of the Year and Support Employee of the Year winners are selected by committees that include representatives from the TCTA and AFT, district staff, 2021 Teacher of the Year Donna Ross, 2021 Support Employee of the Year winner Heather Mackey, and representatives from both higher education and local business.
