This morning, Superintendent Deborah Gist and Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association President Shawna Mott-Wright and Vice President LeeAnne Jimenez surprised five teachers to congratulate each for being named a finalist for the Tulsa Public Schools 2022 Teacher of the Year. Board member Jennettie Marshall also surprised finalists in her district at Celia Clinton Elementary School and McLain High School. 

“I am so excited to celebrate our Teacher of the Year finalists,” said Superintendent Deborah Gist. “These five educators have demonstrated exemplary instructional practice, are building life-changing relationships with their students, and are keeping a relentless focus on ensuring that every child has the tools and supports that they need to succeed in college, careers, and life.”

The five finalists are:

• Dorothy Blakey, first-grade teacher at Wayman Tisdale Fine Arts Academy;
• Shannon Cox-MacPherson, first-grade teacher at Celia Clinton Elementary School;
• Claire Lewis, algebra and AP statistics teacher at McLain High School;
• Traci Manuel, English language arts teacher at Carver Middle School; and
• Janet McCarty Smith, sixth-grade teacher at McKinley Elementary School.

“I am extremely proud of our five finalists,” said TCTA President Shawna Mott-Wright. “Teachers always give everything they have to ensure that every child and family of Tulsa Public Schools has everything they need to be successful. Congratulations to our five finalists on your amazing accomplishment. My heroes have always been teachers!”

After a community-wide nomination process in the fall, schools throughout the district named site-level Teachers of the Year in December 2021. These site-level winners each created a portfolio of work to be reviewed by a committee that included Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association President Shawna Mott-Wright and 2021 Teacher of the Year Donna Ross, as well as school and district leaders. The five finalists were selected following a portfolio review and a Zoom interview with the committee.

The district’s 2022 Teacher of the Year will be announced in spring 2022.

Dorothy Blakey is a first-grade teacher at Wayman Tisdale Fine Arts Academy. She also serves as auxiliary sponsor for the Booker T. Washington High School High Steppin’ T-Connection Band. Dorothy is a life-long Tulsan and attended Council Oak Elementary, Carver Middle School, and Booker T. Washington High School. She has been a member of the Team Tulsa for 26 years.

Shannon Cox-MacPherson is a first-grade teacher at Celia Clinton Elementary School. She enjoys watching her students grow and succeed and has sponsored clubs for gardening and recycling. Shannon first joined Team Tulsa in 2011 as a teacher’s assistant before starting her teaching role in 2013.

Claire Lewis is an algebra and AP statistics teacher at McLain High School. She also serves as student council sponsor, student activities coordinator, and a member of the curriculum team that assists students with career exploration for success after high school. Claire has been a member of Team Tulsa since 2018.

Traci Manuel is an English language arts teacher at Carver Middle School - she is also a proud graduate of both Carver Middle School and Booker T. Washington High School. Traci joined Team Tulsa in 2011 and has also served the district as a substitute teacher, teacher’s assistant, and parent involvement facilitator.

Janet McCarty Smith is a sixth-grade teacher at McKinley Elementary School. She also supports students as sponsor for the student council and running club. Janet joined Team Tulsa in 2004 and has served as a track and field and basketball coach, substitute teacher, and dance instructor.

Los cinco finalistas fueron seleccionados tras una revisión de la carpeta de trabajos y una entrevista de Zoom con el comité.
