Tulsa Public Schools celebrates Lights on Afterschool

Robertson Elementary and Webster Middle and High School celebrated Lights on Afterschool to showcase the importance of after school programming on Thursday. Robertson students worked on pumpkin crafts, and Webster students enjoyed a fall carnival.

"Lights on Afterschool is a really cool national phenomenon now, but for us here locally it means is bringing light and recognition to the work that we do every day," explained Tulsa Debate League Program Director Justin Daniels. "After school has always been important, but it's never been as important as it is now with the things that young people are having to overcome based on something that none of us have control over. Having that time in after school where they feel like they belong and they can take the things that they learn during the day and apply them in new ways in after school space with a little less structure, it means the world to them. We feel blessed to be able to serve at Webster."

Tulsa Debate League hosted the carnival for students and their families which included music, games, costumes, and candy.

"Every after school club is leading a booth. Bike Club is doing ring toss. The Gardening Club is doing the mummy toilet paper, and the Debate Club is doing the spooky boxes," said Daniels. "We wanted young people to feel like they had some ownership in the activity."

Daniels said they consult with students at the beginning of the year to find out what clubs would be meaningful to them. Webster currently has 50 students in the after school program, which is up more than twenty percent from last year. Webster's site coordinator, Jasmine, is always happy to help additional students sign up if they want to participate in the program.

The expanded learning initiative at Tulsa Public Schools works with community partners to provide fun and exciting after school activities for students in the elementary and middle grades, while ensuring that our high school students have more opportunities for enrichment activities and for small-group and one-on-one tutoring.
