Paula Shannon receives award
A glass award says Excellence in Summer Learning

Tulsa Public Schools received the Excellence in Summer Learning award for Ready. Set. Summer! from the National Summer Learning Association and the New York Life Foundation in recognition of the district’s robust and high-quality summer learning opportunities. The award includes $10,000 to support strong outcomes for students. This is the first time in 30 years that a school district has won the Excellence in Summer Learning Award!

Over the past two summers, Tulsa Public Schools has seen academic growth from students who participated in summer learning. Students participating in Ready. Set. Summer! have shown growth in math and stronger beginning of year attendance! Participating youth in the district’s Ready. Set. Summer! program also reported experiencing highly supportive relationships and opportunities to belong, factors known to improve academic outcomes.

At the Summer Learning Summit, members of Team Tulsa, including some camp directors, had the opportunity to share what they have learned with other teams from across the country and participate in collaborative professional development sessions with those teams. This opportunity was made possible thanks to funding from a grant and a generous donor.

In 2023, nearly 6,000 students participated in the Ready. Set. Summer! summer camp. They had the opportunity to build relationships with teachers, socialize with their peers, participate in hands-on learning, and engage in enrichment activities by working with partnership organizations. Through Tulsa Public Schools’ partnership with The Opportunity Project, students were able to engage with hands-on activities with organizations like Fab Lab, Global Gardens, Youth at Heart, Tulsa Debate League, and more! Students took over 150 field trips to exciting locations all around northeast Oklahoma. Check out the links below to see some of the amazing experiences students had.
