Two hundred and ten high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors will earn the Tulsa Public Schools Seal of Biliteracy after successfully demonstrating proficiency in both English and an additional language by high school graduation. In its sixth year of the program, the district will recognize the 210 students who earned seals in twelve languages for a total of 212 Seals awarded in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Hmong, Bahasa Indonesian, Turkish, Patois, and Yoruba. This year, one senior will receive the Seal in both French and Chinese, and one junior will receive the Seal in both Spanish and Portuguese.
Students who successfully earn the Seal of Biliteracy not only increase in global cultural competence but also gain strong language skills that will help them be successful in college, careers, and life. Students from ten high schools participated in the program this year, which offered a number of language proficiency assessments in all these languages.
Since the program began, Tulsa Public Schools has awarded 564 Seals of Biliteracy - making it the district in Oklahoma with the most Seals of Biliteracy awarded. Tulsa Public Schools was the first public school district in the State of Oklahoma to offer the Seal of Biliteracy in multiple different languages in 2019 and continues to offer the Seal of Biliteracy for each graduating class.
