Update on meeting between Interim Superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson and Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction

On Thursday, September 21, Tulsa Public Schools’ Interim Superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson met with State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters. The meeting occurred at State Superintendent Ryan Walter’s request in response to Dr. Johnson’s email asking for clarity on preparations for presenting at the September 28, 2023 State Board of Education meeting. The meeting was held via Zoom.

During the approximately thirty minute meeting, Superintendent Walters and Interim Superintendent Johnson discussed the following topics:

  1. Superintendent Walters outlined his expectations for Dr. Johnson’s report to the state board of education on September 28, 2023:

  • Improvement plans for schools that received letter grade of “F” on the most recently issued state board of education report cards

  • Improved reading scores

  • Financial transparency

Each of these reporting areas should include: milestones, deliverables, and metrics. He also asked Dr. Johnson to speak about her expectations of planned improvements. He anticipated setting aside about 10 minutes for Tulsa Public Schools presentation, but offered more time if that would be helpful.

  1. Todd Loftin, OSDE Chief Academic Officer, would like to begin weekly check-ins, virtual and/or in-person, between the OSDE academic team and the Tulsa Public Schools team, beginning after the September 28 state board meeting.

  2. Superintendent Walters indicated that he has told members of the State Board that they are free to call Dr. Johnson at any time or schedule a visit.

  3. If State Board members share questions for Tulsa Public Schools with Supt. Walters in advance of the September 28 State Board meeting, he will pass those questions along to Dr. Johnson.

  4. Depending on the topic and level of detail for questions asked of Tulsa Public Schools during OSDE board meetings, TPS representatives may provide answers in person or via later follow-up.

  5. Interim Superintendent Johnson shared an overview of the recent visit to three Tulsa Public Schools’ elementary schools by a combined group of Tulsa Public Schools and State Board Members Wesson and Burdick. Supt. Walters and his team were also provided with an update of the conversation held with Interim Superintendent Johnson and Superintendent Romines from Moore Public Schools.
