The Sports Media Career Capstone is the final course in Edison's Sports Media & Broadcasting Career Pathway. This Pathway also includes courses like Desktop Publishing & Graphic Design, Digital Media Production, Sports Media & Technology, and Speech & Debate.

This course replaces the typical classroom environment with one that more closely resembles the workplace. On any given day, students are more likely to be working on individual tasks that build towards a common objective, rather than completing a standardized assignment or activity.

The students have the ambitious plan to produce live broadcasts for all five of Edison's home football games this season, something that has not been done by Edison students in the past. These streams will feature multiple cameras, play-by-play commentating, side-line reports, post-game interviews, highlight replays, and more. They plan to continue working with Edison athletics beyond the football season to produce similar broadcasts for basketball, baseball, and even the school's esports team.

The class has had two guest speakers this semester. First, Paige Orr, a multimedia journalist with FOX23. She holds dual bachelor's degrees in Sports Media and Strategic Communications, and she talked to the class about her experience and passion in the industry. Next, Jeff Medders, the president of the Cowboy Network, was introduced to the class. He spoke about his extensive career in media including working with local news stations as well as large productions on streaming platforms. The Sports Media Program was very thankful for his donation of industry grade equipment for the class to use.

The goal of the course is to provide these students with an experience as relevant to a career in sports media as possible. Through this Capstone class, students will be able to pursue careers in the media industry right out of high school or further their learning at a college level. The final project for this course is a portfolio of their work, which students will be able to use as a tool to showcase their talents after high school.
