Akela Leach named Lanier Teacher of the Year

Akela Leach is the 2025-2026 Lanier Elementary Teacher of the Year!

This is Akela's eleventh year at Lanier, and her ninth year teaching fifth grade social studies and English language arts. We asked her a few questions to learn more about her and her time in Tulsa Public Schools.

What led you to a career in education?

I worked for a couple of non-profits that had in-school programs for kids and youth. I became interested in working within the school system after working with those programs. I began working as a paraprofessional at Tulsa Public Schools. After a few years as a para, I decided to become a classroom teacher.

What is your favorite thing about your work?

I enjoy helping prepare students for their transition from elementary to middle school. The transition can be challenging for many students. We have a lot of in-school clubs and activities at Lanier that build students' interest and leadership skills. We want to build their confidence as they prepare to navigate middle school life. I enjoy watching their academic and personal growth throughout the year.

What is one thing you are passionate about outside of teaching?

I enjoy cooking and learning new recipes. I also really enjoy swimming. I learned how to swim as an adult. Ever since I learned how to swim, I have been swimming many times a week.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I work with a great team of teachers at Lanier. I am a native Tulsan and a TPS graduate. I feel fortunate to be able to give back to the school system that educated me alongside a wonderful group of teachers.
